CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern fell by a 2-0 score to
conference-leading Presbyterian College in a Big South softball
matchup Saturday, April 2 at Buccaneer Field. The Blue Hose scored
two runs in the sixth to provide the winning margin in the game and
the series.
CSU is now 14-21 on the season and has opened Big South play
with a 1-2 record. Presbyterian won two out of three from the Bucs
this weekend, improving to 18-7-1 overall and 5-2 in Big South
play.
Both teams exhibited strong pitching and defense once again, as
CSU held PC to just four hits while registering five of its
own.
Kimberly Hobbs (9-8) pitched a strong outing for the second day
in a row, going the distance while allowing two runs on four hits,
striking out five. The four hits allowed are tied for Hobbs' career
low.
PC's Leslie Hensley pitched a five-hit shutout, recording seven
strikeouts while walking none. Hensley helped her own cause by
driving in the only two runs in the game with a sacrifice fly in
the sixth.
Trea Steele led the way for CSU at the plate and in the field.
She hit 2-for-3 and added three assists and six putouts. Megan
Lombard, Erin Kegley and Stephanie Sbardella all recorded singles
for CSU.
Four Blue Hose players registered base hits, including a double
by Codee Yeske. Taylor Staten and Morgan Durham scored the only two
runs in the game.
CSU threatened to score in the bottom of the first, as Megan
Lombard led off with a single. She moved to second on a sacrifice
bunt and to third on a groundout. A strikeout left Lombard
stranded.
Yeske doubled to lead off the second, but was left on third when
Hobbs struck out Jennifer Marshall.
A pair of singles by CSU put runners on first and second with
two outs in the second, but a strikeout once again quelled the
rally.
Each pitcher continued to put zeroes on the scoreboard, as Hobbs
retired seven straight batters from the third through fifth innings
and Hensley settled in as well.
Steele singled to start the bottom of the fifth for CSU. Pinch
runner Courtney Konyk moved to second on a throwing error, but
would not move closer to home as the game remained scoreless.
PC scored the only two runs in the game in the sixth, with
Durham hitting one to the wall to put runners at second and third
with one out. Hensley then recorded a sacrifice fly, sending
Melissa Adams to the warning track while driving in two.
Hensley sat down the last eight CSU batters in order, and PC
claimed a 2-0 win and series victory.
The Buccaneers conclude their eight-game home stand Monday,
April 4, playing host to rival Coastal Carolina in a Big South
doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 2 p.m.
Presbyterian will travel to Boiling Springs, N.C. to take on
Gardner-Webb Tuesday, April 5 at 3:30 p.m.
