ROCK HILL, S.C. - Radford scored four runs in the bottom of the
sixth inning to complete a 9-1 win over No. 4 Charleston Southern
Friday, May 13 in the Big South Softball Championship presented by
Musco Sports Lighting in Rock Hill, S.C.
Top-seeded Radford (36-20) advances to face Coastal Carolina
Friday at 3 p.m. with a spot in the championship game on the line.
The Buccaneers end their season with a 25-33 record.
Kimberly Hobbs (14-15) broke the CSU single-season record with
her 146th strikeout during Saturday's game. She allowed five runs
on seven hits in five innings, while Hayes Holdsworth yielded four
runs on four hits in relief. Stephanie Dameron and Kellie Snooks
combined for a three-hitter, with Snooks improving to 1-3 on the
season.
Megan Lombard went 2-for-3 for the Buccaneers, while Kristin
Kelleher hit a solo home run, her second of the season.
Four Highlanders registered multiple base hits. Shannon Keefe
hit 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI. Kristen Shifflett hit
2-for-3, scored three runs and hit a homer, while Nichole Beall
added a home run.
Radford struck first with a two-out rally in the bottom of the
first inning. Hobbs struck out Nichole Beall for the second out,
but Taylor Cunningham followed with a single. Cunningham stole
second and then scored on a single by Keefe for a 1-0 RU
advantage.
Kelleher blasted a 2-2 pitch over the fence in center field to
knot the game at 1-1 in the top of the third. Lombard singled up
the middle, leading to a pitching change as Snooks replaced
Dameron. Snooks got the final two batters to fly out.
Shifflett homered the center on the first pitch she saw in the
third inning, and Radford reclaimed the edge at 2-1. The final two
batters popped out for the final two outs of the inning.
Radford extended its lead to two runs at 3-1 on a fourth-inning
solo shot by Keefe. Michelle Beall then singled, and Hobbs hit
Vicki Madden with a pitch. With runners on second and third, Lauren
Williams grounded out for the third out.
Michelle Beall bolstered RU's lead with a two-run homer in the
bottom of the fifth inning, and Radford led 5-1 after five frames.
The Bucs managed one hit in the sixth before Radford come to
bat.
The Highlanders scored four runs on four hits off of Holdsworth
in the bottom of the sixth, with Michelle Beall singling in the
game-ending run.
CSU concludes its season with a 25-33 record. The team recorded
a program-record-tying 10 wins in Big South play, and also notched
a CSU-high in single-season strikeouts individually and as a team.
The Bucs will look to build on momentum gained from this
season.
