CONWAY, S.C. - Senior Nick Chinners homered twice and also
scored on fellow senior Tom Burkett's two-run homer as Charleston
Southern dropped its regular season finale to top-ranked Coastal
Carolina by a score of 10-5 on Saturday afternoon at Watson Stadium
in Conway, S.C.
Chinners, playing in the final regular season game of his
career, finished the day with three runs and two RBI. Burkett was
1-for-3 with a run and two RBI as the Bucs were out-hit 10-9 by the
Chanticleers.
The loss puts CSU at 28-28 on the season and third place at
15-12 in the Big South. After losing to Gardner-Webb on Saturday,
Winthrop is also 15-12 in BSC play. However, the Buccaneers will
take the third place after defeating the Eagles two games to one in
the regular season. It marks the highest finish by the Bucs since
2002, when they also took third place Their ranking moves them
directly to the main bracket of the Big South Tournament, where
they will face No. 4 seed Winthrop on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in
Lexington, Va.
Patrick Dolan (3-3) got the start for the Bucs, giving up seven
runs off of five hits in 1.2 innings. He was replaced by Corey
Deighan in the bottom of the second. Deighan gave up two runs and
two hits in 2.1 innings before Anthony Markham took over, holding
the Chanticleers without a hit for two innings. Tyler Vick also
pitched an inning in relief, giving up two hits and one run.
Keith Hessler picked up the win for CCU, giving up just one run
off four hits in 3.0 innings. Scott Woodward and Daniel Bowman
each had two hits apiece for CCU, with Woodward driving home two
runs as well.
Bowman scored on a throwing error by CSU to put CCU on the board
up 1-0 in the bottom of the second. Hayes Orton walked before
Taylor Motter stepped to the plate for a two-run homer to left
field, pushing the lead to 2-0. Scott Woodward doubled to center
field to score Tucker Frawley before being driven home himself on a
two-RBI double by Tommy La Stella that gave the Chanticleers a 7-0
lead after two innings.
A third inning single by Drew Woodall started a CSU rally, as
Brantley Meier and Alex Tomasovich followed suit. A wild pitch
with the bases loaded brought Woodall home to score CSU's first run
of the day, putting the score at 7-1 in favor of the Chanticleers.
However, the comeback bid was cut short when Hessler struck out his
second batter of the day to end the inning.
The Chanticleers kept it up in the bottom of the third, as
Motter walked before stealing both second and third. He then
scored when Frawley made it to first on a CSU error, stretching the
CCU lead to 8-1. Woodward doubled to left center, allowing Frawley
to score the Chants' ninth run of the day.
Chinners singled to start the fourth inning before Burkett hit
his fourth home run of the season to put the score at 9-3, still in
favor of Coastal. Two innings later, Chinners himself homered to
cut the Bucs' deficit to five at 9-4 in the top of the sixth.
CCU added another run in the bottom of the seventh when Tripp
Martin doubled to left field to score Orton, keeping the
Chanticleers ahead 10-4. However, the Bucs got the run back in
the top of the eighth when Chinners hit his second home run of the
day to put the score at 10-5.
Kyle Ward came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth and kept CCU
from scoring. CCU's Matt Rein was just as effective, allowing the
Chanticleers to take the 10-5 win.
