CLINTON, S.C. - Sara Simpson's second half goal lifted host
Presbyterian College over the visiting Charleston Southern
Buccaneers at Edens Field at Martin Stadium on Thursday evening in
Big South Conference action.
Rebecca Hollstegge recorded her fifth goal of the season in the
loss, scoring in the final second of the first half as CSU (5-8-1,
3-4 BSC) fell under .500 in conference play on the season, while
Presbyterian (2-12, 2-5 BSC) recorded their second win in the Big
South in 2012.
Presbyterian challenged CSU goalkeeper Caitlin Cody early in the
first half, placing shots on goal in the opening three minutes as
Keri O'Neill and Brittany Whitson fired toward the net, but the
redshirt sophomore proved up to the task with a pair of saves to
keep the Blue Hose at bay.
Allison Lewis recorded the first shot for the Lady Bucs at the
2:41 mark but pushed her attempt wide right. Toni Lashley launched
the first shot on goal for CSU at the 7:15 mark, but Jordan
Broadway kept the score even with the save.
The teams traded shots for the next 10 minutes before Tori Lopez
collected the cross from Emily Boggus and fired a shot on goal from
inside the box. Her attempt was deflected back into play by Cody
where it was collected by Catie Smith and she made the Lady Bucs
defense pay with the first score of the contest at the 18:35 mark
to give PC the 1-0 advantage.
Charleston Southern battled back, controlling possession for a
majority of the first half as the Lady Bucs outshot Presbyterian
11-7 over the first 45 minutes of play as Emma Faubert, Gina Cox,
Gina Thomas and Hannah Thomas all launched shots on goal, but CSU
was unable to put a point on the scoreboard until the closing
seconds of the half.
Hollstegge finally broke the seal on the net after collecting a
long pass from Tori Wright inside the box. The senior midfielder
slid into the box in front of the advancing keeper and scored with
0.3 seconds remaining on the clock in the half to even the score
and send the teams into the half knotted up at 1 apiece.
Both teams jostled back and forth as the CSU and PC battled for
the go-ahead score in the second half as neither team put a shot on
net until the 78:34 mark when Simpson collected a high pass inside
the box on the run, volleying her shot attempt into the net to give
the hosts the 2-1 lead.
Charleston Southern's final scoring attempt came in the 83rd
minute as Lewis directed a header toward the back of the net at the
82:20 mark, but Broadway recorded the save on her way to closing
out the 2-1 Presbyterian victory.
Hollstegge and Lashley led the Lady Bucs with four shots apiece
in the game as CSU outshot Presbyterian 16-14 on the match. Cody
recorded a match-high eight saves in taking the loss for the
Buccaneers.
