CHARLESTON, S.C. - Kayla Klinger and Siraya Windsor had 10 kills
apiece as Charleston Southern closed out the 2012 regular season
with a three set sweep over visiting Campbell on Saturday night
inside the Buccaneer Field House, 25-20, 25-21, 25-16.
The Lady Bucs (13-20, 5-9 BSC) hit .337 from the floor in the
match, with Wynter Davis and Meredith Parrott providing nine kills
apiece for CSU, while Davis closed out her final match at home with
eight blocks in the victory. Campbell (7-24, 0-14 BSC) closed out
their 2012 season with the loss, with Brooke Kelley leading the way
for the Fighting Camels with nine kills.
"We had a great film session today and we talked about playing
and being true to ourselves, our habits and training, as well as
being aggressive," commented head coach Al Givens following the
match about the team's victory. "The team wanted to make the Big
South tournament on their own merit and wanted to send the seniors
out on a winning note."
Charleston Southern celebrated Parents Night and Senior Night on
Saturday as the entire CSU team and the players' parents and family
were announced during the pregame ceremonies, while seniors Wynter
Davis and Michaela Luna were recognized during the postgame
festivities in their final match in front of the home fans.
"It's always good when you can send your seniors out with a win,
especially in front of friends and family," said Givens on the
parents and crowd at the game. "Our two seniors really came to play
tonight as Wynter had a great game offensively, while Michaela was
our best passer tonight and one of our top defenders on the
floor."
Charleston Southern and Campbell battled evenly throughout the
first set before Charleston Southern used a 3-0 run which included
a solo block by Davis as the Lady Bucs went up 16-13. The lead
increased to four at 20-16 following a Parrott kill and CSU closed
out the set behind back-to-back Klinger kills and a block by
Klinger and Davis to give CSU the 25-20 set victory.
The Lady Bucs took control of the second set following a
Campbell service error and Windsor followed with a kill to put CSU
up 6-4 in the set. CSU held the lead the remainder of the frame,
going up by as many as five at 15-10 following a Klinger service
ace. Campbell rallied back, evening the set up at 19-all after a
kill by Jessica Groen, but CSU answered with a 4-0 run as Klinger
and Davis were responsible for the final six Lady Bucs' points in
the set as Charleston Southern entered the break with the 25-21
victory.
With the score at 11-9 in favor of Charleston Southern, the Lady
Bucs went on a 10-1 run as Davis had a pair of blocks and Katrina
Houston and Erin LaVenice placed in kills to give CSU the 21-10
lead. Charleston Southern closed out the sweep nine points later on
a LaVenice kill as CSU completed the season sweep over the Fighting
Camels following the 25-16 win.
Kirsten Struksnes led all players with 42 set assists in the
match, while four different CSU players had service aces for the
Lady Bucs. Defensively, Ashley Higginbothem led the team with 15
digs over the three sets, while Windsor completed the double-double
with 10 digs to go with her 10 kills.
Lindsey Coats and Groen added seven kills apiece for Campbell in
the match as the Fighting Camels hit .142 from the floor. Heather
Wilson set up the attack with 24 set assists, while Lauren Bewick
had 11 digs to lead the Fighting Camels defensive efforts.
"We can enjoy this win for the rest of the night and tomorrow
morning we turn our sights to Liberty," said Givens about the Lady
Bucs' upcoming tournament opponent. "They've been the best team in
the conference all season long. We played against them and had a
great match here at home and we expected our team to be up for the
challenge and give their very best effort on Thursday."
Charleston Southern begins postseason play on Thursday afternoon
as the eight-seed Buccaneers take on top-seed Liberty in the
quarterfinals of the Big South Volleyball Championship on Thursday,
November 15th in Boiling Springs, N.C. First serve between the Lady
Bucs and the Lady Flames is set for noon.
