CHARLESTON, S.C. - Jana Matthews and Kristin Kelleher drove in
three runs each to lead the Charleston Southern softball team to an
8-0 rout of Furman in game one of a doubleheader at Buccaneer Field
Saturday afternoon.
The Bucs plated three runs in the fourth and fifth innings to
put the Paladins away and give freshman Jennifer Giles a victory in
her first career start. The 5-5 Jupiter, Fla. native showed off a
superb changeup over five scoreless frames, scattering five hits
and a walk while fanning five.
Giles escaped the top of the first unscathed despite yielding
two hits and let the CSU offense get to work in the bottom of the
inning. Megan Lombard singled and moved to second when Jessica
Brock was hit by a pitch. Kelleher chased home both runners later
as she drove a triple deep to center field for a 2-0 CSU lead.
Shelby Parker came out of the Furman bullpen to quiet the Bucs
in the second and third innings but could not continue the success
in the fourth as the advantage grew to 5-0. Brock and Matthews
produced consecutive RBI singles to left field and Kelleher was hit
by a pitch to bring in Lombard for the final tally of the
rally.
CSU kept the pressure on in the fifth, scoring three more runs
against Furman reliever Lakyn Shull to end the contest early.
Senior Melissa Adams reached on an error to allow Courtney Konyk to
cross the plate for a 6-0 lead, and Matthews provided the
exclamation point by chopping a two RBI single over the head of
Furman's Jessie Homesley at third base.
Matthews notched a two-hit game to propel a Bucs offense which
registered six base knocks and utilized a patient approach to draw
four walks. Lombard found her way on base in three out of four
trips to the plate and scored three runs out of the leadoff spot.
Adams sparked CSU out of the second leadoff spot in the number nine
hole by scoring two runs herself.
