MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Morgan Dowdy tossed her third complete game
of the season and improved to 4-0 as the Charleston Southern
softball team downed Akron, 7-3, on Saturday afternoon at the
College of Charleston Classic.
CSU (5-1) took full of advantage of three Akron (3-6) errors to
post seven runs on six hits, and was led by a two-hit, two RBI day
from sophomore outfielder Stephanie Sbardella.
The Bucs wasted no time in getting to Zips' starter Britanny
Maurer, striking for multiple first-inning runs for the fourth time
in six games this season. All of the scoring damage came with two
outs as Sbardella clocked a RBI single to left for the day's first
run. Kristin Kelleher followed with an infield RBI single for a 2-0
CSU lead.
Akron answered with a single tally off Dowdy in both the third
and fourth frames, before CSU took the advantage back for good on a
Megan Lombard infield RBI single, scoring Melissa Adams from second
base.
Dowdy kept the Zips off the scoreboard in the fifth and sixth
innings, and was given some breathing room for the final frame when
the Bucs rallied for four markers in the top of the seventh.
Lombard crossed the plate for the first run of the outburst on
an error and Sbardella chased home a second unearned run with a RBI
single back to the circle. Another Akron miscue allowed for the
final two runs and a 7-2 CSU cushion as Kelleher and Sbardella
circled the bases.
Akron got one run back off Dowdy in its last at-bat but the
junior right-hander induced a come-backer to end it. Dowdy
scattered the three runs on seven hits and a walk while going the
distance and fanning five batters.
CSU wraps up a five-game in three-day stretch Sunday with two
contests at the Patriots Point Athletics Complex. The Bucs square
off against Morehead State at noon before taking on cross-town
rival and host College of Charleston at 4 p.m. in the final game of
the tournament.
