Matthews Ties Career HR Mark in Loss

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Jana Matthews smoked her first home run of the season and tied teammate Megan Lombard for the Charleston Southern career-lead, but CSU blew an early 4-0 lead and fell to Wright State, 6-4, in a first-round game of the CSU Tournament on Friday morning.

Matthews' blast helped stake CSU to a second inning 4-0 lead but the visitors tallied the final six runs of the contest. Wright State improved to 6-5 with the win while CSU falls to 5-4 with its third consecutive loss.

Wright State's Sarah Shanika allowed the record-setting blast and lasted two innings while allowing all four runs on three htis and four walks.

CSU's Morgan Dowdy threw up a zero in the top of the first, allowing coach Shane Winkler's offense to get to work. Megan Lombard, Jessica Brock, and Lombard all drew walks to start the frame, and Kristin Kelleher delivered Lombard to the plate for a 1-0 lead with a RBI single. Following a Trea Steele flyout, freshman Hannah Wagner provided a 2-0 advantage with an RBI walk.

Dowdy had a 4-0 lead in tow after Matthews went yard but could not keep the Raiders at bay as they tallied two in the third before forging a four-run sixth off Jen Giles (1-2) to account for the final score. Angie Clark evened the ledger with a two run single, before an error and an RBI single from Chelsea Archer chased home two more.

Giles allowed two earned runs and three hits over three innings of work.

CSU looks to rebound later today with a game against Hampton. First pitch at Buccaneer Field is slated for 3 p.m.
