CHARLESTON, S.C. - Linzy Rother and Jen Giles tossed complete
game shutouts, and the Charleston Southern bats came to life as the
Bucs swept Hampton in a doubleheader at Buccaneer Field on Sunday
afternoon.
Rother picked up her second win of the weekend with five innings
of two-hit ball in CSU's 10-0 win in the opener, as home runs by
Stephanie Sbardella and Hannah Wagner highlighted a 12-hit
barrage.
Giles stepped into the circle for the tail end of the double dip
and picked up right where Rother left off by authoring her third
complete game of the season to improve to 2-2 with the 5-0
victory. CSU (9-4) churned out 10 hits, led by a three-for-four,
two RBI day from Jana Matthews.
Game One
Hampton's Travonna Byrd kept the Bucs off the
scoreboard over the first two frames and was one out away from
matching another Rother zero when Sbardella stepped to the plate
with a runner on in the third. Sbardella turned on a Byrd offering
and sent a line drive, two-run shot over the left center field
fence for her second home run of the campaign and a 2-0 CSU
lead.
Kristin Kelleher continued the rally with a single and Rother
pulled a single of her own down the left field line to put two on
for Wagner. The freshman from Chico, California did the rest,
launching a towering three-run drive over the center field wall for
the first round-tripper of her career and a 5-0 CSU cushion.
Wagner drove in two more as CSU tacked on five more in the
fourth, as she finished a sterling three-for-three, five RBI
day.
Seniors Melissa Adams and Megan Lombard set the table for the
fourth inning damage, drawing a walk and singling to start the
frame. Jessica Brock then delivered the first run of the frame with
a RBI double to the left-center field gap, chasing Lombard to
third. A double play once again left the Pirates one out away from
limiting the hurt, but CSU continued to pile on.
Sbardella took the lead first by scalding a RBI double to center
field, and Melanie Stickney stroked a RBI single through the middle
to account for an 8-0 cushion. Wagner then provided the capper,
hitting the first triple of her career to drive in two more for the
final 10-0 margin.
Game Two
Giles was on top of her game from the keynote address
in game two, allowing the CSU offense to time Hampton's Jailynn
Jackson after she recorded zeroes in the opening three innings.
Kelleher led off the fourth with a single and Lizzy Olmstead was
then inserted to run for her at first base by CSU Coach Shane
Winkler. Olmstead eventually came plateward as Ari Tedesco cracked
a clutch, two-out RBI single through the middle for a 1-0 CSU
lead.
The Bucs got back at it in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring
twice in each frame to provide Giles all the support even more
breathing room.
Kelleher drove in the first run of the fifth with a textbook
bunt single, before the Bucs made a daring play on the base paths
to up their advantage to 3-0. Courtney Konyk and Kelleher executed
a double steal with Rother batting, as Konyk got held up a in a
run-down long enough to allow Kelleher to cross the dish ahead of
the throw to Hampton catcher Margaret Wilkins.
Matthews became the next Buc to come through with two outs in
the sixth, showcasing her opposite field prowess by depositing a
two-run single into the right-center field alley for a 5-0
lead.
That was more than enough for Giles, who exhibited expert
command and a terrific changeup to register her second home win.
Giles went the distance while allowing only four hits and no walks,
punching out six along the way.
