Matthews Takes Career HR Lead in Loss

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Jana Matthews moved into sole possession of first place on the Charleston Southern career home-run list with her second long ball of the year, but it was not enough as Kansas defeated the Bucs, 6-3, Friday afternoon in the CSU Tournament at Buccaneer Field. Stephanie Sbardella's team-leading third homer highlighted CSU's (10-7) effort in its first game of the day, but Wisconsin was able to prevail, 3-2, in eight innings.

With 21 career homers, Matthews currently has one more than teammate Megan Lombard, who clubbed a team-high eight last season.

Game One

Charleston Southern's Morgan Dowdy and Wisconsin's Meghan McIntosh hooked up in a pitcher's duel in the opener as both went the distance.

CSU drew first blood with a two-out rally as a Wisconsin error opened the door for the Bucs offense. Junior third baseman Jessica Brock took full advantage, drilling an opposite field double to right to chase home Lizzy Olmstead, who was pinch running for Lombard.

Wisconsin answered back to tie the game in the top of the fourth, but CSU took a 2-1 lead right back on Sbardella's solo shot over the left-center field wall. Once again, the Badgers responded with a run in the top of the next frame, and the score stayed that way until extra innings.

Michelle Mueller was placed on second base to start the tie-breaker for Wisconsin, and came around to score following a ground-out by Mary Massei and a sacrifice fly from Molly Spence, giving the Badgers a 3-2 win.

Dowdy (6-3) was once again sharp in defeat for the Bucs, allowing just five hits and two walks over 8.0 innings, while striking out one. None of the three runs the junior right-hander permitted were earned.

Game Two

Dowdy got the ball again in game two for the Bucs against the Jayhawks, who struck for a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.

CSU wasted little time in responding, though, as Linzy Rother continued her hot hitting by belting a leadoff homer to center field to start the second and tie the score at 1-1.

Kansas took control in the bottom of the third, however, plating four runs to knock Dowdy from the circle. Rosie Hull highlighted the damage with a two-run double to center field, while Marissa Ingle provided the capper with an RBI single.

The Bucs trailed 6-1 entering their final turn at-bat, but would not go quietly against Kansas' Morgan Druhan. Lombard was hit by a pitch to start the frame, and then made the easy trek to the plate when Matthews launched her second homer of the year. Sbardella followed with a walk and Rother smoked a double to bring the tying run into the batter's box twice, but Kristin Martinez preserved the win out of the Jayhawks bullpen by inducing a groundout and a flyout.

CSU is back in action again tomorrow when it meets UConn at 11 a.m., before taking part in an afternoon contest against the Huskies, Kansas, or Wisconsin.
