ROCK HILL, S.C. - Morgan Dowdy threw another complete game and Jana Matthews backed her up with two RBI as Charleston Southern claimed a series sweep of Winthrop and won its sixth straight overall with a 3-1 victory at Terry Field on Sunday afternoon.

Dowdy (12-6) allowed a first inning run to Winthrop (11-20, 0-4) and had to escape trouble several times in the early going before retiring 12 of the last 14 batters she faced. The junior right-hander yielded only the one run on five hits and three walks in seven innings of work, while striking out one.

Winthrop took the early 1-0 lead in the first on Taylor Wright's double and Chelsey Schoenfeldt's RBI single.

CSU (18-13, 3-0) manufactured a run to square the tally at one off Schoenfeldt in the top of the third. Megan Lombard rapped a single up the middle leading off the frame and was sacrificed to second base by Kristin Kelleher. Lombard moved to third on Jessica Brock's bloop single and crossed the plate on a RBI groundout by Matthews.

A pair of two-out hits in the fourth gave the Bucs their first lead of the day. Brock delivered the first tally by lining a 0-2 pitch into left field for an RBI single, and Matthews followed with a run-scoring single through the middle for a 3-1 CSU advantage.

The two-run fourth was more than enough for Dowdy as she found her groove in the late innings. Dowdy set down Winthrop 1-2-3 to cap off the triumph in the seventh, as Lombard made a diving snare of a line drive at shortstop to punctuate the sweep.

Brock paced the Bucs offensively with a 3-for-4 outing as she upped her team-best batting average to .333.

CSU heads back to the diamond on Wednesday at 2 p.m. as it visits Palmetto State rival Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers sport the Big South's top overall record at 26-9, and opened conference play this weekend with a three-game road sweep of Presbyterian.
