Bucs fall to Cougars, 3-2, in 10 innings

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - A late comeback for the College of Charleston spelled disaster for Charleston Southern (8-18) as they fell to the Cougars, 3-2, in 10 innings at Patriots Point Field on Tuesday evening.

The Cougars (19-6) rallied from a 2-0 deficit with a game-tying homerun from Brandon Murray in the bottom of the ninth, then won the game in the extra frame as Cody Martin scored on a double play groundout.

CSU starter Kyle Ward tossed a scoreless four innings for the Bucs, allowing three hits. Austin Weekley also held CofC without a run in 1 2/3 innings in relief. Zach Hagaman allowed a run in relief of Weekley and Denis Buckley struck out four in 2 1/3 innings but allowed the tying homerun. Closer Corey Deighan took the loss, dropping to 1-2 on the season after giving up a run.

CofC's Ryan West went seven innings, recording five strikeouts and giving up two runs off three hits. Nick Osterman got the win with three scoreless innings in relief.

Blake Hunt's RBI single in the second scored Alex Tomasovich to give CSU a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Tomasovich scored again on a sacrifice fly by John Faircloth to give CSU a 2-0 lead.

The Cougars scratched for a run in the bottom of the seventh when Rob Harding scored on Bradley Goodson's groundout. Murray's home run in the bottom of the ninth tied things up at two, pushing the game into extra innings.

Osterman struck out all three CSU batters in the top of the 10th, allowing the Cougars to make the comeback. Deighan walked Cody Martin in the bottom of the tenth before hitting Marty Gantt. Daniel Aldrich grounded into a double play but collided with CSU first baseman Harrison Wilkins, allowing Martin to score the winning run.

Tomasovich, Shelton, Faircloth and Hunt accounted for CSU's four hits in the game.

The Bucs will head out on their first Big South road series of the season this weekend when they head to Buies Creek, N.C., to face Campbell in the Fighting Camels' return to the BSC. The two will square off in a 6 p.m. game on Friday before a playing a Saturday doubleheader.
