SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Jennifer Giles tossed 6.0 innings of one-run ball, but was outdueled by Hannah Alexander as Charleston Southern fell to USC Upstate, 1-0, at Cyrill Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
An Ericka Harris RBI fielder's choice accounted for the only run of the game in the third, as Katelyn Molkenthin crossed the plate after pinch-running for Madison Kieffer, who had had stroked a leadoff double.
Giles (5-7) was excellent once again for CSU (20-17, 5-3), limiting the Spartans to the one run on two hits and two walks, while punching out three. Alexander (18-2) was even better for Upstate (29-6, 2-2), continuing a stellar year by yielding only two hits and a walk while fanning four in the process.
Kristin Kelleher led off the ballgame with a single through the middle, but Alexander proceeded to set down the next eight CSU batters who came to the plate until Melissa Adams drew a two-out walk in the third. Megan Lombard registered the only other base knock of the day for the Bucs in the seventh when she singled up the box with one out in the seventh. Alexander was hardly fazed, however, as she induced a foul pop up from Jana Matthews, and a fly out from Stephanie Sbardella, to end it.
The clubs were schedule d to play a doubleaheader, but the back end of the twin bill was called in the top of the first inning following a severe thunderstorm.
CSU is next in action this weekend when it ventures back into
Big South play for a three-game set at Liberty. The Bucs and Flames
square off in a doubleheader Friday at 4 p.m., before meeting for
the series final on Saturday at 1 p.m.
