CHARLESTON, S.C. - Five runs on nine hits, combined with a solid day on the mound, powered the Charleston Southern baseball team to a 5-2 win over cross-town foe The Citadel on Wednesday afternoon at CSU Ballpark. The win was extra sweet for the Bucs (10-20), as it comes on the birthday of fallen teammate Will Bedenbaugh.
Five pitchers combined to give up 10 hits and record six strikeouts for CSU, with Austin Weekley getting the start. Weekley gave up two runs on five hits while striking out three in 4.0 innings. Zach Hagaman threw 3.0 scoreless innings, striking out two to pick up his second win of the season. Corey Deighan worked out of a jam in the bottom of the ninth to record his third win of 2012.
Bryce Hines took the loss for The Citadel (12-17), giving up two runs on three hits while walking five and striking out eight in 5.0 innings of action.
A Drew DeKerlegand double in the top of the fourth scored Tyler Griffin to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead. They would add another run soon after, with Hughston Armstrong singling up the middle to score DeKerlegand and give The Citadel the two-run lead.
The Buccaneer bats began to heat up in the bottom of the fifth. Thomas Levander singled down the right field line, while Harrison Wilkins drew his 17th walk of the season to get on. Jaren Sustar (1-for-2, 2 RBI)doubled down the right field line to send both Levander and Wilkins home and tie things up at 2-2.
CSU kept at it in the bottom of the sixth as Chase Shelton (2-for-4, run, RBI) knocked out his first career home run to right center field, pushing the Bucs ahead 3-2. Blake Hunt singled in the next at bat, advancing to second on an error. A Brian Welch single drove him home to add an insurance run for the Bucs as they took the 4-2 lead after six innings of play.
Bobby Ison singled to second base to start the seventh inning, and would make it a 5-2 game when driven home on an Alex Tomasovich single up the middle.
The Bulldogs nearly made a late rally in the top of the ninth.
Johnathan Stokes singled to left field before Hayden Hendry
walked. Nick Orvin singled to third base, loading the bases with
two outs. However, Mason Davis would ground out to Deighan as the
Bucs took the 5-2 win.
