CHARLESTON, S.C. - Chelsea Frankeny recorded her second career
collegiate goal, tying up the match in the second half at Blackbaud
Stadium as Charleston Southern took on the College of Charleston
for the Silver Cup. However, a pair of second half scores by Sarah
Schaidle led the Cougars to the win as CofC took down the
Buccaneers, 3-1.
Frankeny evened the match up at 1-1 at the 54:36 mark, bringing
the ball in from the left corner of the field and rolled a shot
past a diving Taylor Avery into the bottom left corner of the net
for her second collegiate goal in three games. Frankeny previous
scored the game-winner in the Buccaneers' season opening victory
over USC Upstate, 2-1 back on August 20th.
"She's a goal scorer and finds a way to put the ball in the back
of the net," commented head coach Eric Terrill on Frankeny's early
season success. "I think in some respects we're starting to sort
things out on our attack, but we're still not finishing as many
goals as we should be. We need to sort some things out on defense,
and that's something we'll have to focus on as we get into the
conference season."
College of Charleston (1-2) opened the scoring in the match as
Nicole Koretsky one-timed Sarah Caramone's pass through the box,
driving her shot into the upper left corner of the net to put the
Cougars ahead at the 19:36 mark in the match.
CSU (1-2) nearly answered less than 30 seconds later as Allison
Lewis blasted a shot from 30 yards out. Her shot attempt was tipped
by Avery into the crossbar and rebounded back onto the field as the
CofC keeper kept the Buccaneers at bay.
Schaidle gave the Cougars the 2-1 lead less than a minute after
Frankeny's equalizer as Cardamone again crossed a ball into the box
in front of the CSU keeper. Schaidle collected the ball and fired
into the lower left corner at the 55:29 mark to put CofC back in
the lead.
Schaidle put the match away late, scoring at the 85:51 mark,
collecting a Buccaneers' clear attempt at the top of the box and
lifted a shot into the upper left corner of the net to close out
the scoring.
College of Charleston outshot the Buccaneers 21-8 and held the
edge on corner kicks as well, 8-1 in recording the win.
"College of Charleston is a good team and they dominated the
ball today," said Terrill on the match. "I'm not happy with where
we're at as a team and we'll keep working at it as the season
progresses and need to take advantage of the opportunities we have
when they present themselves."
Charleston Southern returns home to the friendly confines of the
CSU Soccer Field as the Buccaneers host Northern Iowa on Friday,
September 7th. Kickoff for the match is set for 4 p.m.
