Jacksonville, Fla. - Charleston Southern's baseball team fell
behind early and never fully recovered in a 10-5 loss to the
University of North Florida in a game played in Jacksonville on
Friday evening.
The Buccaneers drop to 5-4 overall on the season and will play
Jacksonville State (3-6) on Saturday afternoon.
Junior shortstop Alex Tomasovich led CSU's offensive effort with
three hits, including a two-run double in CSU's four-run seventh
inning. Sophomore first baseman Robbie Streett added two RBI while
centerfielder Bobby Ison and third baseman Jaren Sustar each had
two hits.
Ison raised his season average to .480 in the loss while Streett
added to his team-leading 10 RBIs this season.
North Florida (8-2) scored single runs in the first two innings
off CSU freshman starter Andrew Tomasovich, adding two runs in the
third and a single run in the fourth for an 4-0 lead.
Sustar got the Bucs on the board with an RBI single in the top
of the fifth, scoring Harrison Wilkins. North Florida, however, put
the game away with a four-run fifth.
Alex Tomasovich lined a bases loaded double to right center,
scoring Ison and Chase Austin in the top of the seventh, cutting
the lead to 9-3. Streett followed with a single to left to score
John Faircloth and Tomasovich and putting CSU in striking distance
at 9-5.
North Florida tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh,
finishing the night with 17 hits. Charleston Southern tallied 12
safeties on the night, this after a 14-hit effort in Wednesday's
win over The Citadel.
Tomasovich dropped to 0-1 on the season, allowing eight runs
(seven earned) on 11 hits through four innings. Stephen Leopard,
Daniel Vargas and Matt Witt shared the final four innings.
CSU will send senior Ryan Gunther to the mound on Saturday.
Gunther is 1-0 with a 3.18 earned run average this season, earning
his first CSU career win last weekend against Marist.
