Buccaneers down Runnin' Bulldogs, 6-1; 3-0 in Big South play

Box score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Marketa Placha clinched the match as Charleston Southern improved to 3-0 in Big South Conference play this season with a 6-1 win over visiting Gardner-Webb University on Monday afternoon.

The Buccaneers swept all three doubles matches and took five of the six singles matches in recording their fourth win in a row, dating back to the end of February.

Charleston Southern improves to 5-4 overall, 3-0 in Big South Conference play, while Gardner-Webb falls to 2-6, 0-2 in BSC action.

Placha defeated Erica White in straight sets on court no. 1, winning 6-3, 6-3 to clinch the match for the Buccaneers as CSU opens Big South Conference play with wins over Longwood, Campbell and Gardner-Webb.

The Buccaneers started the match with wins in doubles court no. 3 and singles no. 6 by default as the Runnin' Bulldogs were only able to field five players on the courts due to injury.

With the win in hand, CSU entered doubles play needing only one win to clinch the first point of the match.

Alexandra Walters and Yvonne Hubler made short work of that, defeating Yasmin Doost and Rokia Sacko on court no. 2, 8-1, to give the Buccaneers the early lead. Alia Nour and Angelica Sidorenko completed the doubles sweep on court no. 1, defeating Erica White and Jenny Lunde, 8-2.

In singles action, with the 2-0 lead courtesy of the default win, the Buccaneers recorded wins on courts 1, 2, 4 and 5 to record their fifth win of the season.

Hubler started the action with a straight set win on court no. 2 over Doost. The CSU sophomore won 6-0, 6-1 to pull the Bucs within one win of clinching the match.

Lunde bounced back from her earlier defeat in doubles play to put the Runnin' Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a straight set win over Sidorenko on court no. 3. Lunde too k the first set 6-2 and swept through the second set with a 6-1 score to put Gardner-Webb within two at 3-1.

Placha, however, dispelled any doubt on the Charleston Southern victory with her win over White on court no. 1.

Walters kept the wins coming for Charleston Southern with a 6-3, 6-3 victory on court no. 4 over Valeria Popko.

In the final match of the day, Nour topped Sacko in a three-set victory, rallying back after falling in the first set. Sacko took the first set 6-4, but Nour answered with a 6-0 win to even the match. In the deciding third set, the Cairo, Egypt native jumped ahead and closed out the win with a 6-2 victory.

Charleston Southern returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on Wofford College. First serve in doubles play between the Bucs and the Terriers is set for 1 p.m.
