Buccaneers open Big South play with 6-1 win over Longwood

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern swept all three doubles matches and carried the momentum into singles play as the Buccaneers downed visiting Longwood University on Saturday afternoon at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex, 6-1, to open 2013 Big South Conference play.

Charleston Southern improves to 2-4 overall, 1-0 in conference action with the win, while Longwood falls to 2-7, 0-3 in Big South Conference play with the loss.

The Buccaneers took wins on all three doubles courts by matching 8-4 scores to record the first point of the match.

Alia Nour and Angelica Sidorenko topped Marta Pinyol and Allison Shulman on court no. 1, while Yvonne Hubler and Alexandra Walters picked up the win on court no. 2 over Malin Allgurin and Sarah Moomau.

Susita Das and Marketa Placha completed the sweep on court no. 3, downing Hannah Hill and Nicole Parker.

In singles action, the Buccaneers took wins on courts 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6, while Allgurin topped Hubler on court no. 2 for the lone Lancers point in the match.

Hubler and Allgurin split the first two sets with Hubler winning 6-3 to open the match, while Allgurin evened it up with a 7-5 win in the second set. Allgurin took the third set tiebreaker 10-8, to take home the point.

Charleston Southern took two three set wins in the match with Sidorenko topping Shulman on court no. 3 and Das battling past Parker on court no. 6.

Das bounced back from a 6-2 loss in the first set to win 6-1, 6-2 over Parker, while Sidorenko responded from a 6-2 first set defeat with 6-0, 6-1 scores to get the win.

Placha, Walters and Nour won in straight sets in their matches.

Placha picked up the win on court no. 1 over Pinyol, winning 6-4, 6-1.

Walters continued her strong play in Big South Conference action with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Moomau on court no. 4, while Nour defeated Hill 6-3, 6-1 on court no. 5.

Charleston Southern remains at home as the Buccaneers take on UNC Charlotte at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex on Monday afternoon. Doubles action between the Bucs and the 49ers is set to begin at 2 p.m.
