ROCK HILL, S.C. - Susita Das clinched the match win as No. 2 seed Charleston Southern advances to the 2013 Big South Conference Championships on Saturday afternoon, defeating No. 3 seed Campbell at the Winthrop Tennis Complex, 4-1.
The senior from Bhubaneswar, India, overcame an early deficit in overcoming Lourdes Ros on court no. 6 in three sets to clinch the Charleston Southern victory. The win puts the Bucs in the Big South Championship match for the first time since the 2010 season where CSU fell to Winthrop in the final match.
Saturday morning's opponent brings about a familiar foe as Charleston Southern faces the only Big South team to hand the Bucs a loss in 2013, as CSU takes on tournament host and top-seed Winthrop University. Winthrop earned their berth in the championship on Friday morning with a 4-0 win over No. 4 seed Liberty.
First serve in doubles play between the Bucs and Eagles is scheduled for 9 a.m., pending weather conditions.
The Bucs opened play strong for the second consecutive day, as Yvonne Hubler and Alexandra Walters topped Ana Ortiz and Natasha Afridi on court no. 2, 8-2. Marketa Placha and Das clinched the Charleston Southern win with a victory on court no. 3, topping Ewa Telenga and Ros, 8-5 to put CSU ahead, 1-0, heading into singles play.
The third doubles match was suspended with Campbell holding the 6-5 lead on court no. 1, as Karolina Chernaya and Tamara Stanic were leading Angelica Sidorenko and Alia Nour.
Moving ahead to singles play, Hubler quickly made it a 2-0 Buccaneers lead as the sophomore from Nordenham, Germany, topped Stanic on court no. 2. Her 6-0, 6-3 lead left the Bucs needing two wins to clinch a berth into the championship.
Walters finished next on court no. 4, defeating Afridi in straight sets to put CSU ahead, 3-0. The junior from Adelaide, Australia, topped her opponent 7-5 in the first set and continued the run with a 6-1 victory in the second set in taking the win.
Ortiz put the Camels on the board on court no. 3, defeating Sidorenko in straight sets to narrow the margin to 3-1. Ortiz took the first win, 6-3, and added a 6-0 win in the second set to take the victory.
With the final three matches heading into third sets, Das was the first to finish for the Buccaneers, rallying back after falling to Ros in the first set.
The Campbell athlete took the first set 6-4, while Das rallied back in the second set with a 6-3 win to even the match. In the deciding third frame, Das took the 7-5 win to clinch the Bucs win and send the team into the finals.
