CHARLESTON, S.C. - Coastal Carolina launched seven home runs on
Tuesday afternoon, as the Chanticleers swept a doubleheader against
Charleston Southern at the CSU Softball Field, 11-3 and 11-2.
The teams combined for nine home runs on the day with Stephanie
Sbardella and Hayes Holdsworth both going deep for the Buccaneers,
while Morgan Node led the way for Coastal Carolina with two home
runs of her own in a rematch of last year's 2012 Big South
Conference Softball Championship Game.
Charleston Southern falls to 6-31, 0-11 in Big South Conference
play on the season, while Coastal Carolina improves to 22-13, 9-2
in conference action with the pair of wins.
The Buccaneers remain at home as Charleston Southern hosts
Canisius tomorrow afternoon in a nonconference doubleheader. First
pitch between CSU and the Griffins is set for 2 p.m.

Bri Chiusano, Kiana Quolas and Kory Hayden had three hits
apiece for the Chanticleers in Tuesday's opener and Morgan Noad and
Sara Rasley had home runs as Coastal Carolina jumped ahead early in
the 11-3 victory over CSU.
Jana Matthews had two hits for the Buccaneers, while Linzy
Rother and Lizzy Olmstead both had doubles to pace the Charleston
Southern offense in the game.
Jennifer Giles (2-22) suffered the loss for the Buccaneers,
allowing 11 runs and 16 hits in the loss, while striking out five
Chants in the game. Kiana Quolas (12-6) picked up the win in a
complete game effort, striking out eight while scattering four
hits.
Coastal Carolina jumped ahead early, plating a run in the first
inning and three more in the second in building a 4-0 lead.
Jazmin Daigle opened the scoring with a RBI single in the top of
the first, driving in Bri Chiusano. Coastal built on their lead in
the second inning as Chiusano, Qualas and Kory Kayden all drove in
runs to stake Quolas to the early lead.
Quolas kept CSU's bats down heading into the bottom of the sixth
inning, retiring 14 batters in a row before giving authorizing a
walk to Natalie Yonan in the frame.
Coastal Carolina, in the meantime, expanded on their lead in the
fifth and sixth innings as Noad connected on a solo home run with
two outs in the top of the fifth, while Hayden doubled in Chiusano
in the top of the sixth to put Coastal ahead, 6-0.
The Bucs struck back for two runs in the top of the sixth as
Yonan snapped Quolas' momentum drawing a one out walk in the
inning. Stephanie Sbardella followed with a walk, putting runners
on first and second. Matthews followed with a line drive to left
field and her hit deflected off the left fielder's glove on its way
to the fence, allowing both runners to score on the play to cut the
deficit down to 6-2.
Coastal Carolina struck for five more runs in the top of the
seven with Rasley providing the big blow in the frame with a
two-run blast to put the Chants ahead 11-2.
CSU took one back in the bottom of the seventh inning as Rother
and Olmstead hit doubles in the frame, before Ari Tedesco brought
in the runner on a Coastal Carolina error.
However, Quolas limited the damage, retiring the next two
batters to end the CSU threat and the game.

Coastal Carolina took advantage of a steady wind blowing
out from left field as the Chants connected on five home runs in
the contest in picking up the 11-2 victory and the afternoon sweep
over Charleston Southern.
Stephanie Sbardella and Hayes Holdsworth both went deep for the
Buccaneers to provide the CSU offense in the game as the Bucs fell
to 0-10 in Big South Conference play on the season.
Linzy Rother (3-8) suffered the loss on the day for Charleston
Southern, pitching 2.2 innings in her 11th start of the season,
while Holdsworth closed out the contest, hurling the final 3.1
innings in the loss.
Ashley Bagwell (8-5) picked up the win on the day, scattering
three hits over the five innings, allowing eight strikeouts
overall. Morgan Mastriania closed out the contest, pitching the
final inning for the Chants.
Charleston Southern provided the first blow of the game as
Sbardella sent a towering drive over the left field foul pole for
the first run of the game with two outs in the bottom of the first
inning.
Coastal Carolina responded with five runs in the top of the
second to take the lead for good on the day. The Chants were led by
a three-run home run by Jessie Winans, while Kiana Quolas also went
deep in the inning to put the visitors ahead, 5-1.
Holdsworth battled back for the Buccaneers in the bottom of the
second, driving a line drive home run over the left field fence to
leave CSU down three runs after the first two innings.
After a scoreless third inning, Coastal Carolina plated one run
in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth to close out
the scoring in the contest.
Jazmin Daigle doubled in Courtney Howell for the CCU run in the
fourth inning, while home runs by Noad and Hayden capped the
scoring in the fifth and Rasley's two-run shot finished the scoring
in the sixth.
Bagwell retired 10 CSU batters in a row at one point in keeping
the Charleston Southern offense at bay and Mastriania closed out
the game in the sixth to end the contest.
