CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern's Harrison Wilkins was
2-for-3 with a solo home run in the ninth inning to pull the Bucs
within one, but visiting Georgia Southern held on for a 3-2 win on
Tuesday afternoon at CSU Ballpark.
CSU (11-21) plays again on Wednesday in Spartanburg, S.C.
against USC Upstate. First pitch is at 6 p.m. Georgia Southern
improves to 20-11 with the win.
Both teams struggled to come up with big hits with runners in
scoring position. They combined to leave 27 runners, Georgia
Southern stranding 18 and CSU nine.
Wilkins hit the ball hard twice to lead the Bucs attack,
doubling into the gap in his first at-bat and the ripping his
second home run of the season in the ninth as CSU cut GSU's lead to
3-2 with no outs in the ninth. The Bucs could not get anything
going following the home run against Eagles' closer, Matt McCall,
who picked up his fourth save.
Georgia Southern jumped to an early 2-0 lead and made it stand
up.
The Eagles' Scooter Williams reached on a single on a diving
stop by Jaren Sustar, which saved a double at the time, and scored
as Bucs' starter Chase Shelton (LP, 0-1) issued a bases-loaded walk
later in the first inning. They grabbed their second run in the
second inning as Zac Lenns doubled and scored.
CSU broke into the scoring column with an RBI double from John
Faircloth in the sixth. Faircloth curled his second hit of the day
into the right-field corner to score Zack Hagaman, who drew a
leadoff walk and cut the lead to 2-1.
GSU scored its final run in the sixth as Ben Morgan walked and
scored as he stole second and the ball ricocheted off his helmet
and into left centerfield.
Robbie Dodds was 3-for-4 with an RBI for GSU.
Faircloth was 2-for-4 for the Bucs along with Wilkins two
hits.
GSU starter Josh Stevenson (WP, 1-2) picked up his first win of
the season with six solid innings of work.
