The Bucs draw the No. 8 seed in next week's Big South
Championships, which begin on Tuesday. CSU will face Campbell, the
Big South North Division Champion, in their tournament opener at
4:30 p.m. on the Liberty campus.
The other game on the Bucs' half of the bracket is No. 4 Radford
and No. 5 Liberty, who play immediately following CSU-Campbell on
Tuesday night.
Coastal's rally spoiled the Buccaneers' Senior Day. CSU honored
its 10 seniors in a ceremony before the game.
The Chants broke a 3-3 tie on a RBI double by Zach Remillard in
the sixth, scoring Connor Owings who walked and stole second. CCU
added an insurance run in the seventh with a similar formula as
Alex Buccilli singled, stole second, and scored on a wild
pitch.
The Bucs didn't go quietly. John Faircloth belted a solo home
run to cut the lead to 5-4 in the seventh. Alex Tomasovich followed
with a double down the left field line to put the tying run on
base. Chase Shelton came a few feet from giving the Bucs the lead
on the ensuing at-bat, flying out to the wall in left to end the
inning.
Faircloth had his 11th double and second home run of the season
in his first four-hit game of the year. Shelton added a 2-for-4
afternoon and hit the ball hard four times.
Coastal reliever Ryan Connolly (WP, 6-3) worked three and a
third innings of relief to pick up the win. Patrick Corbett worked
two scoreless innings to get his third save.
CSU's Kevin Buran (LP, 2-9) scattered 10 hits, allowing four
earned runs. Joe Pistacchio struck out four in one and two-thirds
innings of relief and had a one batter reach on a wild pitch
following a strike out.
Coastal took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a pair of
two out hits. Jake Kane doubled just out of the reach of Bucs'
right fielder Shelton to give the Chants a runner in scoring
position. Buccilli followed with RBI single over the head of Bucs'
shortstop Alex Tomasovich to give Coastal the lead.
CSU knotted things up in the bottom of the first with some
two-out offense. Alex Tomasovich yanked a double inside the bag at
third for his 12th double of the season. He scored on a sharply hit
RBI single from Shelton to tie things at 1-1.
CSU grabbed a 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth. Jaren
Sustar and Kevin Hickey put together back-to-back RBI singles to
move the runs across. Shelton got the inning starter with his
second hit of the day, singling to right.
