
Five players in double-digits as CSU tops Trinity Baptist in Bucs' home opener

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern had 11 different players in the scoring column on Saturday night as the Buccaneers topped visiting Trinity Baptist in CSU's home opener inside the Buc Dome, 98-35.
The Bucs scored 35 of the first 39 points of the contest in jumping out to a 60-22 halftime lead as CSU ran away from the Eagles for the second time in as many seasons. CSU improves to 1-0 overall in the early 2014-15 season with the win, while Trinity Baptist fell to 1-3 overall with the loss.
Tatum Jarvis led five CSU players in double-digits in the game with 15 points, while Monique Maximilien recorded the double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds as CSU shot 48.9 percent from the floor in the win. Rochelle Brophy nearly recorded a double-double of her own as the sophomore center finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. Alise Karlsone added 14 points and two of CSU's five three-pointers, while Natasha Lebedeva rounded out the CSU scoring leaders with 10 points in 20 minutes.
The Bucs defense shut down the Trinity Baptist offense throughout the contest as CSU had 21 steals in the contest led by Alyssa Mann's four. The Eagles turned the ball over 34 times in the game and the Bucs held TBC to 26.2 percent shooting from the floor.
Charleston Southern took the ball inside at will against the Eagles as the Bucs outscored Trinity Baptist 64-8 inside the pain and 27-4 off second chance points. CSU held the 61-28 rebounding edge in the contest behind Christal Barnett's game-high 12 rebounds, with almost an even split between offensive and defensive boards (30-31).
Karlsone opened the scoring in the first half with a three-pointer from the right wing on the Bucs opening possession as CSU held Trinity Baptist to two free throws over the first 6:37 in building a 17-2 lead. Amber Van Wieren snapped the TBC cold streak with a short jumper in the paint, but the Bucs defense again took control as CSU forced 12 turnovers over the first 10 minutes in building a 35-4 lead.
Shauntavia Dobson drained a deep three-pointer from the right wing to cap the stretch at the 9:39 mark as the Bucs lead reached as many as 39 points at 56-17 with 3:11 remaining in the half following the Jarvis layup. CSU went into the break with the 60-22 lead following Lebedeva's layup with 41 seconds remaining, while Eden Crowell's three-pointer at the buzzer rimmed out to send the teams into the locker room.
Karlsone opened the second half in similar fashion to the first as the senior from Saldus, Latvia connected on the triple from the left wing on the opening possession to push CSU's lead over 40 points. The Bucs margin reached 50 at 81-31 with 8:10 remaining on the Marley Brown layup, while CSU's lead reached 60 with 3:42 remaining following the Jarvis layup.
Barnett put in the final point of the game, making the tail end of a pair of free throws with 1:45 left in the contest to close out CSU's season opening win.
Mann finished the contest with eight points and five assists for the Bucs, while Brown had six points and six assists in leading the CSU offense. Freshman guard Alecia Hardy added four assists.
Van Wieren led Trinity Baptist's offense in the contest with 11 points, while Kaneesha Ellick had seven points and six rebounds in the loss.
Charleston Southern remains at home on Monday evening as the Bucs open up a CSU basketball doubleheader inside the Buc Dome. The women's team hosts Clearwater Christian with tipoff at 5:30 p.m., while the men close out the night with the 2014-15 home opener at 7:30 p.m. against Erskine.
