BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Mi'Kola Cooper clinched the Charleston Southern victory on Saturday morning as the Buccaneers topped host Gardner-Webb at the Webb Tennis Complex in Big South Conference action, 5-2.
The Buccaneers rallied back after losing the doubles point for the first time in Big South play this season to take singles victories on courts 1 through 4 and court no. 6 to clinch the victory over the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Charleston Southern improves to 8-3, 3-0 in conference action with the victory, while Gardner-Webb falls to 8-7, 1-3 in Big South play on the year.
Marketa Placha and Nicolin Luecke were the first off the court in doubles play for the Buccaneers, topping Catherine White and Mary Walker Mixon on court no. 3, 8-1, for the first CSU victory on the afternoon.
Gardner-Webb rallied back behind the hard-fought 8-7 (7-1) win on court no. 1 as Ronia Hutterli and Yasmin Doost topped Alexandra Walters and Yvonne Hubler to even doubles play. Jenny Lunde and Rokia Sacko clinched the first point of the day for the host Runnin' Bulldogs, topping Alia Nour and Angelica Sidorenko on court no. 2, 8-6.
Down 1-0 heading into singles action, Charleston Southern wasted little time in rallying back and taking control of the match. Marketa Placha evened the contest at 1-1 with a straight set 6-0, 6-0 win over Doost on court no. 1 and Hubler followed shortly after with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Lunde on court no. 2.
Walters continued the Buccaneer roll on court no. 3, topping Hutterli 6-2, 6-2, before Cooper clinched the CSU victory on court no. 6 with a 6-1, 7-5 win over White. Luecke closed out the CSU winning streak with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Valeriia Popko on court no. 4.
The Runnin' Bulldogs picked up the final point of the match on court no. 5 as Sacko ended Nour's Big South Conference winning streak with a 6-3, 7-5 win.
Charleston Southern is back in action tomorrow afternoon as the Buccaneers host UNC Asheville in Big South Conference action at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex. First serve in doubles action is set for 1 p.m.
