Charleston Southern clinches Big South regular season title with 6-1 win over Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Charleston Southern clinched their second Big South regular season women's tennis title on Sunday afternoon as the #73-ranked Buccaneers topped host Campbell University at the Nisbet Tennis Center, 6-1.

The Buccaneers victory highlights the second perfect season in regular season conference action in Charleston Southern women's tennis history as Charleston Southern clinched the top seed in the 2014 Big South Conference Tennis Championships starting next week in Boiling Springs, N.C.

Charleston Southern opens up postseason play next week in the Big South Tournament quarterfinal round with tournament action running from April 14 – 17.

Charleston Southern previously went undefeated in the 2010 season when the Buccaneers posted a perfect 7-0 record in conference play, including an 11-match winning streak with victories over #66 North Carolina-Greensboro and #59 Winthrop.

This season, Charleston Southern ends the regular season on the back of a 14 match winning streak, posting a victory over then #62 Winthrop at the WU Tennis Complex and eight shutouts over the span including Big South wins over Radford, Presbyterian, UNC Asheville and Longwood.

Yvonne Hubler and Alexandra Walters both finished the 2014 Big South season with perfect 9-0 records in conference action as the duo completed the year going undefeated on courts no. 2 and no. 3 for the Bucs on the year.

Hubler, Walters and CSU freshman Nicolin Luecke all finished the season with winning streaks in singles action reaching double-digits with Hubler and Walters both winning their last 13 matches, while Luecke finished on a 10 match winning streak.

The Buccaneers duos of Hubler/Walters and Placha/Luecke both improved to 8-1 on the season this afternoon as Charleston Southern took the opening doubles point from host Campbell on the afternoon. Hubler and Walters topped Karolina Chernaya and Claudia Ortiz on court no. 1, 8-3, while Luecke and Placha topped Ana Maria Ortiz and Ewa Telenga on court no. 3, 8-1.

Natasha Afridi and Tamara Stanic picked up the lone doubles victory for the Camels, winning 8-5 on court no. 2 over Mi'Kola Cooper and Alia Nour, 8-5.

Hubler, Walters, Luecke, Cooper and Nour all finished the 2014 regular season on a strong note with wins in singles action as the Buccaneers took the final decision from the Camels, 6-1.

Hubler topped Afridi on court no. 2, 6-2, 6-1, while Walters topped Stanic 6-2, 6-2 on court no. 3. Luecked continued her recent dominant run with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Reichart on court no. 4. Cooper added a 6-1, 6-7, 1-0 (10-8) win on court no. 5 over Telenga, while Nour finished her senior campaign with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Claudia Ortiz on court no. 6.

Placha suffered her first loss in Big South Conference play this season on court no. 1 against Chernaya for the Camels lone point of the match, falling in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
