Bucs' streak upended at eight by Presbyterian, 5-4

Box Score

CLINTON, S.C. – Presbyterian jumped to a three-run lead in the first inning to end Charleston Southern's eight-game winning streak on Sunday afternoon with a 5-4 win.

CSU head coach Stuart Lake knew as the game ended his Buccaneers had their opportunities to extend the streak and leave the PC Baseball Complex with a weekend sweep of the Blue Hose.

Presbyterian led 3-0 after a bases-loaded triple by Cam McRae in the bottom of the first off Bucs' starter Levi Mauldin. CSU spent the rest of the game scrapping back to tie the game at 4-4 in the seventh, but a solo home run from Brad Zebedis off of reliever Denis Buckley (LP, 2-1) in the bottom half of the inning was the difference.

"I thought the triple in the first inning was the difference," Lake said. "We had led all 18 innings up until that point this weekend, but I thought they responded. W had our chances. We couldn't get that hit to turn the game our way, especially late. They pitched well. (Wortkoetter) came in late and did a really good job for them"

The Bucs move to 25-21 on the year and 8-12 in Big South play, while PC improves to 15-30-1 and 7-17 in conference play. CSU still has work to do make the Big South Tournament, but the Bucs have been as good as any one in the league the last three weeks.

"We have to play these last eight games the way we played the previous eight games, and even today's game in some ways," Lake added. "We've just got to get a little bit more on offense when we have the chance and we could really finish strong. "

The Buccaneers left five runners on-base over their final three at-bats and didn't push the tying run across in the ninth after getting back-to-back singles from Andrew Widell and Alex Tomasovich. CSU left 11 runners on base in the loss.

Widell was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. He doubled in the fifth inning to score Kevin Hickey and drove home Bobby Ison for the Bucs' first run with a single in the third.

First baseman Chase Shelton was 3-for-5, but was stranded on base three times. He helped the Bucs outhit PC, 12-9.

Ison finished 2-for-4 with a double and scored twice.

Zebedis was 3-for-4 with two RBI and the game-winning home run to lead Presbyterian.

Reliever Ethan Wortkoetter (WP, 2-3) worked the final 2.2 innings and scattered three CSU singles.
