CHARLESTON, S.C. - Anna Sells, Gina Thomas and Jordan Newman all scored during a dominant stretch in the second half as Charleston Southern topped host Savannah College of Art and Design in the Bucs' season opener on Friday evening, 3-1.
The win marked a career milestone for Head Coach Eric Terrill as the Bucs' head coach recorded his 150th career victory at CSU. Terrill, the longest tenured head coach in the Big South in entering his 20th season with the Bucs, becomes just the second coach in Big South history to reach the career mark.
"It's an accomplishment for the program and for the university," commented Terrill. It's a good feeling and shows the stability and success the program has had throughout the years. I'm happy for 150 and grateful, and look forward to this team continuing to play well and achieve the goals they have set for the season."
It was a tale of two halves between the Bucs and the Lady Bees in the contest as SCAD controlled the tempo of the game throughout the first half, while Charleston Southern broke loose in the second half behind strong play from junior forward Chelsea Frankeny on their way to their first win of the season.
"Chelsea Frankeny was the linchpin in making it all happen today and she did a great job," Terrill said, It takes time for the team to get on track, but our defense and our back four did a great job the whole way through. Liz Amanda was phenomenal in goal and the freshmen made a huge impact today."
Frankeny set up both Sells' and Thomas' goals in the second half to put the Buccaneers ahead 2-0 in the contest, while Gina Cox assisted on Newman's goal to give the Bucs a 3-0 lead. A late goal by SCAD's Kelly McKay ended the Bucs' shutout attempt, but Liz Amanda Brown recorded her first collegiate victory between the pipes in the 3-1 victory.
"SCAD's a really good team and physically they did a great job today," Terrill said. They took it to us in the first half, but in the second half, we decided to press them as much as they were pressing us. The girls stepped up and overcame the first game jitters and were able to get it done."
After a first half that saw SCAD outshoot the Bucs 8-4 and record two corner kicks by the Lady Bees, but Brown proved up to the task with a save. A strong defensive push by the Bucs' backline including standout play by seniors Tori Wright, Stephanie Hand, Hali Singleton, Kenandra DeSaussure and sophomore Nikki Schoning kept the Lady Bees at bay.
Sells broke the seal on the scoreboard in the second half at the 62:19 mark as off the assist from Frankeny. Frankeny slipped the ball from the right side of the box past a diving Sara Hall to Sells in front of the empty net, and the sophomore forward tapped the ball in from six yards out for the first goal of the contest.
Less than a minute later, Frankeny again dished out the assist on the goal, this time setting up senior midfielder Gina Thomas following the deflection in the box. Thomas collected the ball from near the top of the box and launched the ball into the open net past Hall's challenge to put the Bucs ahead 2-0 at the 62:50 mark in the game.
Newman added an insurance goal at the 74:20 mark off the pass from Gina Cox as the freshman forward took the ball from eight yards out and slipped in the first goal of her collegiate career into the back of the net to triple the CSU lead with 15 minutes to play.
McKay took one back for SCAD late in the contest at the 87:20 mark off the long pass from Olivia Buechler, firing the shot in from the left side of the box, to put the score at 3-1.
However, the Bucs quelled any comeback attempt, playing keep away for the final three minutes in closing out the victory.
The Bucs return to the pitch Sunday evening as CSU travels to Blackbaud Stadium to take on local rival College of Charleston in the renewal of the Silver Cup battle between the two squads. Kickoff between the Bucs and the Cougars is set for 7 p.m.
