Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern fell in double overtime in the annual battle for the Silver Cup, dropping a 2-1 decision to the College of Charleston on Sunday evening at Blackbaud Stadium.
Chelsea Frankeny continued her march through the Charleston Southern record books in the first half, connecting on her 10th career goal to put CSU ahead 1-0 for a majority of the contest. However, a late second half goal by Riley Narum sent the teams into overtime, where Mary Kate Bowers connected on the golden goal to give the Cougars the victory.
Charleston Southern falls to 1-1 with the loss, while the College of Charleston improves to 2-0 in the young 2014 season.
In a back-and-forth first half, Frankeny put the Bucs on the scoreboard first after receiving the cross from Jordan Newman toward the top left of the box. After taking a dribble, the junior forward launched a rising shot that sailed over the glove of CofC starting goalkeeper Taylor Avery and under the crossbar at the 27:59 mark to give the Bucs the 1-0 lead.
College of Charleston would battle back in the second half, putting up 12 shots in the half in challenging CSU freshman goalkeeper Liz-Amanda Brown. Brown proved up to the task until the 81st minute, where Narum slipped the ball in off the pass from Sarah Cardamone to tie the match up at 1-1.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the Cougars took advantage of confusion through the box as Narum's pass sailed to the feet of Bowers, who put it into the open net in the 103rd minute to give CofC the victory.
Brown finished the contest with six saves on the evening in goal for the Bucs, while Lauren Killian picked up the win for the Cougars after playing the entire second half and overtime periods.
Frankeny's first half goal was the 10th in her collegiate career, moving her into a four-way tie for 19th all-time in the CSU career goals list, matching Laurie Smith (1993-96), Lauren Jones (1998-01) and Rebecca Hollstegge (2009-12).
Charleston Southern opens up their 2014 home schedule this weekend as the Bucs host the first weekend of the Nike Tournament on Friday and Sunday. The Bucs will take on NJIT on Friday afternoon at the CSU Soccer Field with kickoff set for 4 p.m. CSU will close out the weekend on Sunday against S.C. State, taking on the Bulldogs at 1 p.m.
