Sells, Brown lead Bucs to 2-0 win over S.C. State

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Anna Sells scored goals early in both halves, while Liz-Amanda Brown and the Charleston Southern defense combined for a shutout as the Buccaneers defeated visiting S.C. State on Sunday afternoon at the CSU Soccer Field, 2-0.

Sells scored in the ninth and 50th minutes of the match to give the Bucs a lead they would not relinquish. The pair of goals capped off a fantastic weekend for the CSU sophomore forward as the Greenville, N.C. native and was her second career multi-goal game with the first coming last season on September 1st in the Bucs 5-3 win over Jacksonville State.

"The two goals that Anna scored were really good," CSU Head Coach Eric Terrill commented. "She got freed up and was able to just drive at goal. It was in our game plan-to push forward, and everyone on the team did a good job doing that today."

Brown and the defense turned away all four shots by the Bulldogs in the contest, with the Coral Springs, Fla. native making a breakaway saving tackle at the top of the box to end S.C. State's best scoring chance in the game in recording her first collegiate shutout in the net.

"If you are going to have a successful program at the collegiate level, you have to have two things: someone to put the ball in the back of the net, and someone to keep the ball from going in the back of the net on the other side," Terrill said. "I think we've got two players who are filling those roles nicely in Amanda and Anna. They are both younger players and they are continuing to develop. It will be fun to watch them both continue to improve from the levels they are already playing at."

Charleston Southern improves to 3-1 overall with the win and 2-0 at home after the first weekend of the Nike Tournament. S.C. State falls to 1-3 overall with the loss.

"It's important to make your home field to be an advantage," said Terrill. "Winning at home, on your field, is always important. This game was a good win for us. [South Carolina State] is a good team with some good players from all over the country. There was a lot of physical contact going on both sides, and I thought they really prevented us from generating as much attacking as we probably could have in the game."

The Buccaneers remain at home next weekend as CSU hosts the second weekend of the Nike Tournament on Friday and Sunday, welcoming North Florida and Richmond to the CSU Soccer Field. The Bucs host North Florida on Friday, taking on the Ospreys at 4 p.m., while CSU closes out the weekend with a 1 p.m. matchup against the Richmond Spiders on Sunday afternoon.

Sells pounded the net early as the forward took the first two shots of the game before finding her mark in the ninth minute off the assist from Erica Gazzani. Gazzani's pass led Sells into the box where she was able to track it down before putting in the shot from 10 yards away past a diving Haley Austin to put CSU ahead 1-0 at the 8:38 mark in the first half.

S.C. State nearly equalized it a few minutes later on Valery Fernandez-Davila's corner kick, but a Bulldogs foul inside the box negated the goal and kept SCSU off the board.

Sells opened up the second half in similar fashion to the first, scoring on her first shot attempt of the period at the 49:31 mark off the assist from Tori Wright. Wright played a long clearance down the middle of the field that Sells was able to track down and put in the shot from the top of the box past S.C. State's Katelyn Kern to double up the CSU lead less than five minutes into the period.

CSU threatened to add to their lead late in the contest as the Bucs outshot the Bulldogs 13-0 in the second half, but Kern made five saves to keep CSU off the board.

Brown controlled the CSU defense in the backline in the second half and made several athletic plays, including coming out to tackle and end an S.C. State breakaway attempt in the 75th minute in recording her first collegiate shutout of the match.

Overall, Charleston Southern outshot the Bulldogs 23-4 on the afternoon and held the 5-4 advantage on corner kicks.
