Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern fell in non-conference play on Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 3-1 decision to The Citadel at Washington Light Infantry Field.
Anna Sells scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the second half to narrow the CSU margin, but two goals by The Citadel's Vanessa Aponte proved to be too much to overcome as the Buccaneers fell to the Bulldogs.
Charleston Southern drops to 4-3 overall with the loss, while The Citadel improves to 4-5 with the win.
Aponte put the Bulldogs in the lead in the 10th minute of the contest, taking the pass from Montana Hinson toward the left top of the box. Her shot cleared traffic and sailed into the upper right corner at the 9:13 mark to give Citadel the early lead.
The Bulldogs doubled their lead before the half as Flo Amess scored off the assist from Lea Raedle inside the box at the 25:19 mark to take the 2-0 advantage into the break.
Sells put the Bucs on the scoreboard at the 60:09 mark, taking the long pass from Chelsea Phillips up the right wing. The sophomore forward dribbled into the box, drawing up Bulldogs' keeper Naomi Carter, before tucking her shot into the open net to narrow the margin at 2-1.
Aponte clinched The Citadel win in the 72nd minute with her second goal of the game coming on a shot from 25 yards out, tucking it under the crossbar to seal the Bulldogs' win.
Liz-Amanda Brown had two saves in the game for the Bucs, while Carter stopped eight CSU shots as both keepers were peppered all throughout the match. Overall, CSU and The Citadel both attempted 18 shots apiece with Phillips and Chelsea Frankeny leading the Bucs with four apiece, while Aponte and Ana Mesa had four apiece for the Bulldogs.
CSU is back in action this weekend as the Bucs travel down to DeLand, Fla., to take on Stetson University on Sunday, August 21. Kickoff between the Bucs and the Hatters at the Athletic Training Center is set for 1 p.m.
