GREENSBORO, N.C. – Charleston Southern shot its lowest total of the tournament in Tuesday's final round to finish in a tie for seventh at the 2014 UNCG Forest Oaks Fall Classic. The Bucs carded a team-300 (+12) to finish knotted with James Madison and second among seven Big South Conference opponents at the event.
The Bucs' finished with a total of 917, five behind Big South foe High Point. Elon won the event at 899, six strokes ahead of Rollins and nine strokes in front of Jacksonville. Maryland (909) and UNC Wilmington (910) round out the top five.
Mercer's Katy Harris was the medalist, winning the event by two strokes.
CSU's Shelby Thompson tied for 21st with a final-round 74 (+2). The sophomore had four birdies in her round, a tournament high for the Buccaneers.
Freshman Hayley McNeill's 72 (E) gave the Bucs another highlight in the final round. She tied for 23rd with fellow freshman Emelie Flink to give CSU three finishes in the Top 25. McNeill moved up 16 spots with her strong final round. Flink finished with a final round 75 (+3).
"I'm proud of the team for playing their best round today and moving up the leaderboard a few spots," CSU head coach Matt Cram-Smith said. "They faced a lot of adversity in this tournament with the course and the weather yesterday, where it rained pretty much all day and the 10.5 hours of straight play without a break. Their patience was tested and they kept hitting good shots and trying their hardest so it was a positive tournament even though we didn't get the win"
Sophomore Bella Johnson shot a 79 (+7) to finish at 234 and tied for 44th.
Freshman Savannah Hallman shot an 81 in her final round, her lowest score of the tournament.
CSU hosts the Wendy's Invitational at Rivertowne Country Club next week. The 54-hole event runs Monday and Tuesday in Mount Pleasant, S.C.
