CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern guards Armel Potter and Patrick Wallace scored 19 points to pace five players in double figures scoring as the Bucs cruised to a 107-74 win over Columbia International on Monday.
Wallace hit two three-pointers late in the first half as part of a 26-10 run that sent CSU (4-6) into the locker room up by 19 points. The Bucs built the lead to as many as 34 in the second half despite allowing Columbia International (2-10) to shoot nearly 51 percent overall.
Javis Howard made a number of nice moves en route to scoring 12 of his 14 points in the second stanza for CSU. Howard added 12 rebounds to compile his second career double-double. Ugo Mmonu chipped in a near double-double of 14 points and nine boards to help the Bucs to a 45-26 advantage on the glass. CSU also took advantage of 22 CIU turnovers, posting a 29-14 edge in points off turnovers.
CSU head coach Barclay Radebaugh was pleased to see his team get in the win column as it embarks on a challenging two-game road swing to Wright State and Florida State.
"It was nice to win and nice to see our guys smiling out there," Radebaugh said. "It's nice to feel the basketball going in at that rate. We're really talented offensively and we're starting to hit our stride there."
"The other end of the floor is our concern," Radebaugh continued. "Defensively, we've got a lot of room to grow and get better in our understanding of defensive concepts, and execution. We've got some time now that classes are over so we'll work hard at improving."
JC Cavin paced all scorers with 22 points for CIU, and hit his first seven shots of the game to help the Rams hang around. Ben Johnson contributed 17 points, but committed seven of CIU's 22 turnovers.
Johnson hit a three to bring CIU within 27-24 with 6:10 remaining in the first half. CSU responded with the next 11 points, though, to assume control. Reuben King got the surge started with three straight points, and Rae Robinson knocked down a triple to keep it going. Mmonu continued an active night with a three-point play, before Potter capped the juncture with a fast break layup.
Wallace connected on three of his four treys over the final 2:41 of the opening stanza to help CSU push its lead to 53-34 by intermission.
Howard highlighted the second half with an array of solid offensive plays. He drove the baseline for a three-point play, and threw down a two-handed dunk follow off a missed shot.
Jabbar Washington and Zach Durkee both reached the scoring column for CSU after entering during the final five minutes. Washington finished with four points and four assists in an active five minute sequence. Durkee had a layup for his second basket of the campaign.
CSU hops on another flight later this week as it jets to Dayton, Ohio for a Thursday night meeting with Wright State. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
