CSU (5-8) played some of its best defense of the year to end the out-of-conference slate on a high note. The Bucs welcome league favorite High Point to Charleston on Saturday in a rematch of last February's triple overtime classic won by CSU.
A pair of three-pointers by Patrick Wallace helped spark a 15-0 first half run that put the game away early for CSU. The spurt extended to 27-5 by halftime as the Bucs took a 45-16 lead into intermission. Wallace drained five threes in total and finished with 15 points to pace six CSU players in double figures scoring. Aaron Wheeler compiled a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.
CSU head coach Barclay Radebaugh was encouraged by his team's performance as it embarks on 16 Big South Conference games. Three of the next four will take place at home.
"That was a really good defensive effort by our guys," Radebaugh said. "It's not easy sometimes to guard a lot of small, quick guards so that's a credit to them. That's a team averaging 85, 86 points a game that we did a good job tonight."
"We know we can score the ball and haven't quite hit our stride there yet," continued Radebaugh after CSU shot 51 percent. "The focus has been defensively and we hope our work there is starting to pay off. That's five pretty good halves now. We played well second half at Wright State, and had a chance to win if we knock down some open shots at Florida State. We know we've got a big test Saturday with High Point coming in so these next three days are really important to continue to improve."
St. Andrews (5-6) was led by 15 points from Lee Vanderhorst but could never generate much of a rhythm against CSU's quality man-to-man defense.
Vanderhorst's only basket of the first half brought St. Andrews within seven at the 10:37 mark of the opening half, but the Knights went scoreless for the ensuing 5:24.
Ugo Mmonu began the Bucs' surge with a layup, before Wallace buried back-to-back triples in a span of 21 seconds. He tacked on another trey later in the stanza up the CSU advantage to 41-14.
Rae Robinson contributed 12 points and four more threes of his own, and connected on two midway through the second period as CSU stretched its edge to 72-29.
Two Demetrius Pollard threes helped fuel a 12-0 run later in the half as CSU's advantage swelled to 91-32 with just over four minutes left. Pollard notched 13 points and three assists.
CSU now turns its attention forward to a visit from High Point on Saturday. The Panthers have won at least a share of the Big South regular season title each of the last three years. Tipoff at the Buc Dome is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
