ATHENS, Ga. - Charleston Southern fell in the NCAA Regional First Round to host Georgia on Saturday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, dropping a 4-0 decision to the No. 7-ranked Bulldogs.
The Buccaneers' season comes to an end with an 18-3 overall record. The most successful season in the history of the program, CSU established new marks in season wins, their first Big South Tournament victory and the first NCAA Tournament berth in program history.
CSU faced a tough draw against the host Bulldogs as all six Georgia singles players were ranked among the top 105 players in the country, while all three doubles teams were ranked in the top 85.
The Bucs came out battling in doubles play to start the match. Yvonne Hubler and Nicolin Luecke fell to #43 Silvia Garcia and Kennedy Shaffer, 8-1, to open doubles play on court no. 2. Mi'Kola Cooper and Angelica Sidorenko fell to #11 Lauren Herring and Ellen Perez on court no. 1, 8-2.
The pair of Georgia wins on courts 1 and 2 ended doubles play on court no. 3 where Sophie Cloessner and Marketa Placha had battled #85 Hannah King and Caroline Brinson, 4-4.
In singles action, Garcia topped Cooper on court no. 3 for Georgia's second point of the match, 6-1, 6-2. Perez followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hubler on court no. 2 to put the Bulldogs within one point of clinching the match. King defeated Valeria Koussenkova on court no. 5, 6-3, 6-2, to end the match.
At the time singles play was suspended, Placha was holding her own on court no. 1 as the two-time defending Big South Player of the Year was trailing 5-4 to the fifth-ranked player in the country in Georgia's Herring.
