Sells scores twice in Buccaneers' 2-2 tie against Wofford

Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Anna Sells scored a pair of second half goals to lead Charleston Southern to a 2-2 tie at Wofford on Monday night in CSU's 2015 road opener.

The junior forward recorded her fourth career multi-goal game and sent the contest into overtime with her game-tying goal in the 81st minute of the match. Sells nearly put the game away in the first overtime period with a header in the 98th minute, but neither team was able to find the back of the net for the golden goal and the win.

Sophomore goalkeeper Liz Amanda Brown recorded five saves in her season debut as the Buccaneers opened on the road at Snyder Field. The CSU keeper showed off her athleticism with several diving stops inside the box while facing 21 Terriers' shots.

Charleston Southern (0-0-1) fired 12 shots in the contest, led by Sells' three, while freshman Sidney Doherty had two shots on goal. Wofford's (0-1-1) Alex Carroll made five saves on CSU's seven shots on goal in the contest.

Wofford took the early lead in the 15th minute of play as the Terriers' Lucy Etro found Katie Beuerlein on a long pass to the edge of the CSU goal box. Miscommunication between the CSU defender and keeper let Beuerlein slip the ball through the defense and into the net for the opening goal at the 14:23 mark.

The first half Wofford lead would stand until the 62nd minute of the contest when Lydia Frierson touched the ball away from a defender deep inside the Wofford goal box. Frierson found Sells six yards in front of the net and Sells slid her shot attempt past Carroll and into the lower left corner to tie the game up at the 61:15 mark in the contest.

Four minutes later Wofford retook the lead as Hayley Younginer took the pass from Emma Fletcher, took it past the CSU defense and connected on a shot that tucked just inside the left post past a diving Brown to put the Terriers back in the lead.

Sells sent the match into overtime with her goal at the 80:29 mark as the CSU junior beat everyone to the free ball and finished on the breakaway to tie the match up at 2-2.

Chelsea Frankeny had a clean look at the net in the first overtime period, but her attempt was saved by Carroll. Sells' header also went wide as both teams were held scoreless in the frame.

Sells fired a shot in the first minute of the second overtime and Doherty added a shot on goal one minute later, but Carroll stopped both to close out the tie.

CSU returns home to the CSU Soccer Field this weekend for the start of the first Nike Challenge as the Bucs host Stetson on Friday afternoon. Kickoff between the Bucs and the Hatters on the Big South Network is set for 4 p.m.
