CHARLESTON, S.C. - Grace Clark, Kelly Hinkle and Erica Gazzani all scored second half goals for Charleston Southern and freshman Jazmin Gonzalez stopped all six Stetson shots on goal as the Buccaneers topped the Hatters on Friday afternoon at the CSU Soccer Field, 3-0.
Clark, Hinkle and Gazzani all recorded their first goals of the season as the Buccaneers took control in the second half in the win.
"We had three different players score today for us," said head coach Eric Terrill following the game. "We haven't had a center back score for us in quite a while, but Grace kept running and all of a sudden the ball was in the back of the net. She did a great job getting the offense going. Kelly's was a beautiful shot and she just had a perfect strike there at the net. Erica put the game away for us at the end there and really helped keep things going for us."
The victory improves the Buccaneers to 1-0-1 on the season as CSU tops Stetson for the first time since the 2001 season. Stetson falls to 1-2 with the loss.
"This was a big win for us this season," said Terrill. "This was a school that came in and beat us in a 1-0 game last year, but I really felt like they thumped us. To take basically the same squad, with a few new players and come back with a 3-0 score line is a big deal. We started a little slow, like we did in the Wofford game. But, as things went along, we picked up some steam and really got going. I felt like we really dominated the second half today."
Gonzalez's play in the net kept the Buccaneers in the game in the first half as Stetson outshot the Bucs 11-6 in the opening frame. Twice in the first half Gonzalez was in the right place at the right time to make the play on Stetson one-time attempts inside the box in recording her first collegiate shutout.
"Jazmin was really solid tonight," Terrill commented. "I don't know that she made any super acrobatic saves, but Stetson was in her face all game tonight. A lot of those shots tonight were right at her. She did everything clinical and got the job done."
Lydia Frierson recorded her second assist of the season on Clark's opening goal, while Hinkle picked up her first assist of the season on Gazzani's score in the 90th minute to cap off the Buccaneer leaders in the contest.
Stetson peppered the net in the first half recording nine of the first 11 shots of the game in the first 20 minutes of the contest as the Hatters challenged Gonzalez early in the contest.
Mara Keomanivane nearly put the Hatters in the lead at the 33:09 mark in the first half, but her attempt from 18 yards out connected with the crossbar and ricocheted back into the field in the Hatters' best scoring attempt in the period.
The second half belong to the Bucs as Clark dribbled the ball up the field in the 58th minute. With no one challenging her, she passed the ball to Frierson and took the give-and-go pass back up the middle and put the ball into the back of the net from 18 yards out to give CSU the 1-0 lead.
Hinkle doubled the CSU lead in the 70th minute as the CSU sophomore midfielder collected a loose ball outside the box and went high with her shot, connecting from 20 yards out into the upper left corner of the net to put the score at 2-0.
With time winding down, the Bucs closed out their scoring as Hinkle lofted a ball from the right wing over Smith's head to the feet of Gazzani, who finished from four yards out at the 89:15 mark for the final score of the contest.
Charleston Southern continues the 2015 season at home on Sunday afternoon as the Bucs host Northern Kentucky at the CSU Soccer Field. Kickoff between the Buccaneers and the Norse on the Big South Network is set for 1 p.m.
