Bucs handle Savannah State in midweek action, 10-4

Box Score

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Charleston Southern piled up 17 hits and held Savannah State to three singles over the final six innings to pick up a 10-4 midweek win on Wednesday night at Tiger Field.

Nate Blanchard, Sly Edwards and Chris Singleton all had three hits for the Buccaneers and five CSU pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts and one earned.

CSU improves to 14-19 overall, while Savannah State falls to 9-24. The Bucs have won two of their last three and have some momentum heading into a key weekend series with UNC Asheville.

"I'm happy to get a win and to play well in doing so," Bucs Head Coach Stuart Lake said. "We needed a win after a tough few weeks and a big weekend ahead. We've not played well here in the past, but I felt like we were pretty good tonight. This one will give us some momentum heading into Asheville."

The top of CSU's order wore out the Tigers, led by Singleton, Edwards, and Blanchard's big nights. The three combined for nine hits, six runs, and five RBI. Six Bucs had multiple hits on the night.

"It seemed like Blanchard got it going every at-bat," Lake added. "Sly was great again. I think he had his sixth triple. He's fun to watch hit and then fly around the bases. I'm happy with the was our bullpen pitched too. Adam Andrew threw well despite few walks, then (Chayce) Hubbard and (Wil) Hartsell just shut the door."

The Bucs had 12 strikeouts in the game, with Hubbard and Hartsell both striking out the side in the final two innings.

Jon Piriz (W, 2-4) struck out four and worked three scoreless innings of relief for starter Kyle Dyson. Dyson gave up three hits and three runs, one earned in his three innings of work. Adam Andrew gave up a run in the seventh as the Bucs used five pitchers.

The Bucs scored four runs in the third to overcome an early 1-0 deficit and seize control. SSU cut the lead to one in the bottom of the inning, but CSU answered with three in the fifth and three more in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Edwards finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and scored three times. He also added his Big South-leading six triple. Singleton was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

Charles Sykes was 0-for-2 for the Tigers, but had two RBI and scored a run.

CSU opens a three-game Big South series with UNC Asheville on Friday. First pitch is at 6 p.m. at CSU Ballpark.
