
Buccaneers advance to Sunday's semifinals with 4-1 win over No. 5 Campbell

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Charleston Southern opened their championship defense on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Big South Women's Tennis Championships presented by Musco Sports Lighting at the Cook Tennis Center as the No. 4 Buccaneers topped No. 5 Campbell, 4-1.
The Bucs took the doubles point to open the match, while Valeria Koussenkova, Kimberley Koerner and Sophie Cloessner all won their singles matchups as CSU topped Campbell for the second time in the 2016 season.
Charleston Southern advances to take on the top overall seed and tournament host Liberty on Sunday morning. The Flames advanced to the semifinals following their 4-0 win over No. 9 Radford on Saturday morning. Doubles play between the Bucs and the Flames is set for 11 a.m.
Campbell took the opening doubles result on court no. 2 as Georgina Segarra and Isabel Boada topped CSU's Gabriela Srodowski and Kimberley Koerner, 6-3.
The Bucs rallied to take the matches on courts 1 and 3. Nicolin Luecke and Brianna Thompson topped Irina Karangozishivili and Nina Asanin on court no. 1, 6-3, to even doubles. Sophie Cloessner and Valeria Koussenkova followed shortly after with a 6-4 win over Ewa Telenga and Maud Mrad on court no. 3, 6-4.
Koussenkova put the Bucs up 2-0 with a straight sets win on court no. 6 over Telenga. The sophomore topped her opponent 6-2, 6-0.
Koerner followed shortly afterward with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Asanin, extending the Bucs' lead over the Camels to 3-0 with the win on court no. 5.
Boada stemmed the CSU tide on court no. 4 with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Srodowski to put the Camels on the board.
Cloessner closed out the competition and stopped play on all courts following her 6-2, 6-4 clinching win on court no. 2.
The match between Luecke-Karangozishvili on court no. 1 was halted as the duo was heading into the third set. Campell won the first set 6-3, while Luecke rallied back to even the match with the 6-3 win in the second frame.
The same was true on court no. 3 between Thompson and Mrad. Mrad took the first set 6-3, while Thompson sent the match into the third frame with the 6-3 second set win.
