BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Charleston Southern took five of the six singles matches on their way to topping Gardner-Webb in Big South Conference play on Sunday afternoon at the Webb Tennis Courts, 5-2.
Sophie Cloessner, Brianna Thompson, Gabriela Srodowski, Kimberley Koerner and Valeria Koussenkova all picked up singles victories for CSU (11-4, 6-2) as the Bucs won their second match in as many days.
The Bucs dropped the doubles point against the Runnin' Bulldogs (6-12, 3-5), but rallied back to win their sixth Big South match of the season.
Nicolin Luecke and Thompson combined to top GWU's Stina Magnusson and Sandra Bolstad on court no. 1, 6-3, for the lone Bucs point in doubles play.
GWU rallied back with wins on courts 2 and 3 to take the 1-0 lead after doubles competition. Rokia Sacko and Mary Walker Mixon topped CSU's Srodowski and Koerner on court no. 2, 7-5, to even the doubles score. Catherine White and Sarah Rieckmann completed the doubles win with a 7-5 win on court no. 3 over CSU's Koussenkova and Cloessner.
CSU opened singles play with Koerner topping White on court no. 5 in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, evening the match at 1-1. Koussenkova finished shortly after with a 6-2, 6-2, win over Laura Fermosel on court no. 6, giving the Bucs their first lead of the afternoon.
Thompson continued the Bucs roll with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Bolstad on court no. 3. Srodowski sealed the CSU win on court no. 4 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Rieckmann.
Sacko recorded the lone GWU point in singles play with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 win on court no. 1 over Luecke.
Cloessner closed out play on court no. 2 with a 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 win over Magnusson to set the final margin.
Charleston Southern returns home and closes out Big South Conference play next weekend as the Bucs host UNC Asheville at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex on Friday afternoon. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
