Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern was unable to overcome a hot start by the College of Charleston on Wednesday night in the teams' annual battle for the Silver Cup as the Buccaneers fell to the Cougars, 4-0.
The Buccaneers (2-2) were out-shot 22-9 in the contest and the Cougars (2-3) held the 5-3 advantage on corner kicks in the contest.
CSU's Kelly Hinkle led the Buccaneers with three shots (two on goal) in the contest as the Bucs struggled to find an opening in the CofC defense in the loss. Erica Gazzzani and McKenzie Davis added two shots apiece.
Alyssa Dellacqua recorded seven saves in the net for the Buccaneers as CSU now turns its attention to this weekend and the Nike Challenge 1. The Bucs host Long Island and Eastern Kentucky this weekend at the CSU Soccer Field with CSU hosting LIU on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Bucs close out the weekend against EKU on Sunday with kickoff at 1 p.m. on the Big South Network.
College of Charleston took the early lead in the 14th minute as Jessica Schifer scored off the corner kick from Laura Ortega. The goal came on the set piece with the pass finding the head of Schifer among the confusion in the box giving the Cougars the 1-0 lead.
Suzi Vallez put CofC ahead 2-0 in the 44th minute as the Cougars took advantage of sharp passing inside the box for their second goal of the contest. The ball was passed into the box to Jessica Preedom who found Vallez's feet in front of the left post. Her shot deflected off the post and into the net at the 43:07 mark.
CofC added a pair of late goals in the second half as Rio Speller-Drews scored off Ortega's corner kick in the 79th minute and Schifer added a second goal in the 90th minute in the win.
Lauren Killian stopped all six CSU shots on goal in recording the shutout victory.
