An over three-hour lighting delay in the afternoon prompted play to continue until nightfall. Round two action will conclude starting at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday with the final round following immediately after.
Thompson won the 2014 CSU Invitational with a string of final round birdies and is looking to defender her championship after last year's event was rained out. She put together an even-par 72 in the morning and has a steady round two in progress. Thompson birdied the par-four 1st hole to enter the red and has just one bogey through 15 holes. Birdies at 11 and 12, following the delay, enabled Thompson to pull even with Georgia Southern's Iben Hvass. Thompson's production highlighted an excellent showing that has CSU at 5-under, challenging for the best round in school history.
College of Charleston is one streak ahead of CSU with a 3-over par team total. Mary Fran Hillow is in third place, one shot behind Thompson and Hvass, to lead the Cougars.
Bella Johnson and Milleina Ohara are also in the hunt for coach Matt Cram-Smith's veteran Bucs. Johnson had the round of the day going for CSU before play stopped. She bogeyed her first hole of the second 18 but has since rattled off four birdies and eight pars to get 1-over par. Ohara is 1-under on the back nine, even for the second round and 2-over in total.
CSU is 15 shots clear of fourth-place Presbyterian College. The Blue Hose were hovering around even par after the first round but slipped back in the afternoon. Fellow Big South Conference rivals High Point and Longwood stand sixth and eighth, respectively.
