CSU falls at Campbell to close season

Buies Creek, N.C. – Charleston Southern fell in straight sets to Campbell on Saturday in the regular season finale at Gore Arena, 25-18, 25-17, 25-20.

CSU finishes the season 8-22, 3-13 following the defeat, while Campbell improves to 20-10, 10-6 with the win. Addison Kaderli led the Bucs with six kills. Madison Martin and Hannah Western led CSU defensively with 16 digs each.

Campbell jumped out to an early 10-4 lead after an Allena Heath kill. Another Heath kill increased the Campbell lead to 16-8. CSU cut the lead to 18-12 following a Campbell attack. The Bucs trimmed the margin to 23-18, but the Camels won the next two points to close out the first set.

A CSU attack error gave Campbell led 9-5 early in the second set. A Camels service error narrowed the lead to 13-9. Campbell won five of the next seven points with an Alysha Mitchell kill giving the Camels the 18-11 lead. The Camels led 22-13 until CSU took four of the next five points to cut the lead to 23-17. Campbell rallied back to take the final two points to secure the set and the 2-0 lead.

A Kaderli kill gave Charleston Southern an 8-6 lead early in the third set. The Camels fought back on a Heath kill to grab a 16-13 lead. The Bucs won four straight points with Skylar Blackmon putting in a kill to go in front 17-16. A Campbell service error handed CSU a 19-18 lead until the Camels won four points in a row to take a 22-19 lead. A Western kill trimmed the lead to 22-20, but Campbell won the final three points to close the set and the match.

Inside the Numbers

  • Rachel Smith had 19 assists for CSU.  Smith finishes the season ranked eighth all-time at CSU with 1,804 career assists.
  • Madison Martin had 16 digs for the Bucs. Martin finished the season with ten straight matches with double-digit digs.
  • Kylie Klein had three blocks for CSU. Klein concludes her career fourth all-time at CSU with 415 career blocks.

News and Notes

  • Charleston Southern dropped its ninth straight Big South match to close out the season.
  • The Bucs finish the season with only eight wins. It's the lowest win total since CSU recorded six wins in 2013.
  • Charleston Southern did not qualify for the Big South Championship for the first time since 2014.
  • CSU loses only two players to graduation in Kylie Klein and Siraya Windsor.
