Buccaneers topped by Highlanders in overtime

Box Score

RADFORD, Va. – Charleston Southern was unable to thwart a strong comeback effort by Radford in falling to the Highlanders on the road in overtime, 67-59, on Saturday afternoon.

The Buccaneers (13-10, 7-5) were led by a game-high 16 points from both Alyssa Mann and Rachel Burns, while Radford (17-9, 9-3) was paced by the double-digit performances by Destinee Walker (15) and Janayla White (13).

CSU scored 14 straight points to end the first period on their way to a 19-4 run and a 28-11 Bucs' lead with 4:08 left in the first half.  Radford struggled with ball control and a tough CSU defense that forced 14 turnovers in the first two periods.  The Buccaneers closed out the half with the 30-22 lead and shot 44.4% from the floor in the first twenty minutes, with Mann and Burns contributing a trio of three-pointers and Nayla long adding a bucket from beyond the arc plus a jumper in the first half.

Radford found its second wind in the second half as the Highlanders responded from a Mann layup that gave CSU a double-digit lead, 32-22, at the 8:58 mark in the third quarter. Highlanders found the hot hand from downtown and put up a trio of three-pointers from Sydney Nunley, Claudia Quevedo and Jen Falconer all converting from deep to give Radford the 22-12 quarter advantage and the 44-42 lead heading into the fourth.

After a Burns layup to open the period, the Highlanders went on a 5-0 run with back-to-back layups from Jayda Worthy and Nunley.  Mann added a free throw to cut the deficit to four, but the Bucs were unable to connect and struggled through a near six-minute scoring drought.  Jasmine Blackmon added a layup for CSU with 3:50 remaining and Ke'Asia Jackson followed with another to tie the game at 49-49 with 1:53 left to play.

Both teams swapped baskets as White recorded a layup that CSU would answer with a Long layup to put the score at 51-all with 1:04 remaining.  Quevedo pushed Radford ahead in the final 33 seconds with another layup, but Jackson wasn't ready to give up and matched the basket with a layup with seven seconds remaining on the clock to send the game into overtime.

White took a trip to the foul line in the opening minute of extra play and made both attempts for the 55-53 Radford lead.  Worthy and White recorded three layups over the next four minutes as the Buccaneers struggled to find a basket.  CSU went perfect from the stripe in extra minutes, but a combined six free throws from Jackson, Burns and Brianna Lakes fell short as the Highlanders outscored the Bucs 14-6 for the 67-59 win in extra minutes.

The Buccaneers now turn their attention to next week and their second chance for a win as they host UNC Asheville on Tuesday night.  Tipoff at the Buc Dome is set for 7:00 p.m. on the Big South Network.
