Campbell walk-off leads Camels past Buccaneers in series finale

Box Score

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell took advantage of a Charleston Southern throwing error in the bottom of the ninth to put two runners in scoring position and Jeff Hahs delivered the walk-off RBI single scoring Matthew Barefoot as the Buccaneers fell in the series finale to the host Camels on Sunday afternoon, 3-2.

The Buccaneers (14-12, 3-6) tied the game up in the top of the ninth as Nate Blanchard delivered a two-out RBI infield single to even the score up at 2-2. Aaron Miller led off the inning with a double to the left centerfield gap and advanced to third on a Dan Vaughan sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Blanchard's base hit brought Miller across the plate to force the bottom of the ninth.

Adam Wyse reached on a one-out single through the left side for the Camels (14-14, 4-2) in the ninth. The CSU error on Barefoot's grounder moved both runners into scoring position. Bucs' shortstop Kyle Vesnesky threw out Wyse attempting to score on Drew Butler's grounder, but Hahs delivered the clutch hit for the Camels to take the season series from the Bucs.

The Bucs' loss spoiled a career showing from relief pitcher Daniel Johnson as the junior left-hander went 5.0 innings in relief and scattered four hits while striking out 10 in the contest. Johnson recorded three strikeouts in both the fourth and sixth innings to shut down the Camels offense.

CSU's pitching staff combined to allow one earned run in the contest with reliever Ryan Stoudemire (3-1) suffering his first loss of the season after going the final two innings and allowing two hits and one unearned run while striking out two. Hiott pitched a perfect 0.2 innings, while Tyler Weekley completed the first inning of the contest for the Bucs.

Wyatt Tyson (1-1) picked up the win for the Camels going the final two innings and allowing two hits and a run while walking two. Campbell was able to salvage a quality start from Ryan Kirk after the CU starter went 6.0 innings, striking out five while scattering four hits in the no-decision.

Blanchard drew three walks prior to his run-scoring single in the ninth to lead the Bucs as the senior infielder reached base four times in the contest. Jason Miller and Aaron Miller had two hits apiece for CSU, while Chris Singleton was also the recipient of a pair of base on balls in the game.

Campbell struck for the early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. Barefoot crossed the plate on a CSU throwing error on a stolen base attempt, while Cole Hallum's double play ball allowed Butler to score to give the Camels the two-run advantage.

The Bucs took one back in the top of the second as CSU took advantage of Brandon Gragilla's lead-off double to narrow the margin to 2-1. Aaron Miller brought the CSU designated hitter home with a two-out single to left field to put the Bucs on the board.

From there, the pitching staffs took over as Kirk and Johnson traded zeroes on the scoreboard through the sixth inning.

The scoreless string continued until the ninth inning and both teams' late-inning two-out hitting.

Buccaneer Notables
Daniel Johnson became the first Buccaneer pitcher to reach the 10 strikeout mark in the 2017 season as the left-handed reliever achieved the plateau in only five innings' work on Sunday afternoon. Johnson has struck out 25 batters in his last 12.1 innings' worth of work and is currently third on the team overall in strikeouts.

Johnson's 10 strikeout performance was the first time a CSU pitcher had reached that mark in nearly a calendar year. The Bucs had several pitchers reach eight this season prior to Sunday. CSU's last 10 strikeout performance was by alum Evan Raynor against UNC Asheville on April 15, 2016.

The Bucs weekend was a mirror image in reverse of how CSU has been playing this season. CSU snapped a five-game skid on Friday nights with their first win of the season on the final day of the work week in the series opener. However, CSU had its Sunday streak snapped this afternoon after recording a perfect 6-0 run on Sundays in 2017.
