CHARLESTON, S.C. - Peyton Motley scored with just over six minutes remaining in regulation, and it stayed even the rest of the way as Charleston Southern played to a 1-1 draw against Mercer on Sunday at the CSU Soccer Field.

The Buccaneers are 1-0-1 following the opener of a three-game homestand while Mercer is 2-1-1.

The Bears broke a scoreless deadlock in the 65th minute when a foul was whistled in the box, and Abigail Zoeller converted the penalty kick for her second goal of the season. That tally held up until the Bucs were able to draw a foul deep in the Mercer end in the 84th minute, and Motley fired the free kick just inside the bottom left corner of the goal past the outstretched arms of Mercer goalkeeper Jordyn Ebert.

Inside the Stats

  • Motley's goal was the second of her career. She also found the back of the net a year ago in a 3-0 win over UNC Asheville.
  • CSU held a 19-18 edge in shots, but Mercer had six shots on goal to four for the Bucs.
  • Jazmin Gonzalez made five saves for CSU, and Ebert stopped three shots.
  • Motley, Sidney Doherty, Dakota Fiedler and Maddie Reilly each had two shots.
  • In a physical contest, CSU was called for 15 fouls, one more than the Bears.

Quoting Eric Terrill
"Today's game was an improvement from where we were at Wofford. I think our attack created some more opportunities, but we just have to finish. Mercer is a good, physical team and this was a good test for our players."
