CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Southern soccer team opens its 2019 season on Thursday when the Buccaneers face Jacksonville in a 2 p.m. contest at Southern Oak Stadium.
The Bucs are coming off a 9-6-2 season, their most wins since also claiming nine victories in 2011, and finished 5-4-1 in the Big South. The Dolphins struggled to a 1-14-1 record under first-year head coach Laura Busby.
Eric Terrill begins his 25th season as head coach and is the second-winningest coach in Big South history with 174. The Bucs return only four players who started at least nine games last year and welcome a group of 11 freshmen to the fold.
Juniors
Kayla Robinson (three goals) and
Kat Klingensmith (two) are the top returning scorers with sophomore
Dakota Fiedler adding two assists. Fifth-year senior goalkeeper
Jazmin Gonzalez started 13 times last year and had a goals against average of 1.00, the second-best in school history, while making 74 saves and posting four shutouts.
The defense, which has long been a strength of the CSU side, lost three long-time starters but bring back junior
Juliana Barbaccia, who has started all 35 games in her career.
CSU holds a 4-2 record against Jacksonville but have lost both road games. Last year, the Bucs claimed a 2-1 victory with Klingensmith scoring the winning goal six minutes into overtime. Robinson had the other CSU tally.
Following the trip to Jacksonville, the Bucs play their first home game on Sunday at 2 p.m. when they host Wofford.
