HIGH POINT, N.C. – In a tale of two halves, High Point used a strong finish to overcome Charleston Southern men's basketball Thursday night taking a 77-73 decision in Big South action from the Millis Center.
Phlandrous Fleming Jr. led all scorers with 26 while grabbing 11 rebounds for a double-double, but High Point (8-10, 6-7 Big South) used a 55-point second half to overcome Charleston Southern (1-16, 0-13 Big South).
John Michael-Wright had 24 to lead the Panthers who had four players in double figures while
Melvin Edwards Jr. scored all 10 of his points in the second half for the Bucs.
High Point would go on to close the game on a 17-2 run over the final 3:55 after the Bucs held a 71-60 lead on a Fleming jumper.
First Half
- Phlandrous Fleming Jr. had a near double-double in the first half along scoring 12 points and grabbing seven rebounds while blocking three High Point shots
- Terence Porter Jr. added nine points off the bench while Sean Price added six points, six rebounds and three assists
- Charleston Southern would lead by as many as 15 in the opening half keeping the Panthers to just 22 points in 20 minutes and .296 from the floor
- High Point used early Buccaneer foul trouble to hang around but only converted on six of their 10 free throw attempts
- Alex Holt paced High Point with eight points and five rebounds hitting all four free throw attempts
Second Half
- John-Michael Wright, the league's No. 2 scorer, had 20 of his 24 points to lead High Point back from a 35-22 Buccaneer halftime lead
- In that second half, High Point shot .568 from the floor hitting five treys
- Phlandrous Fleming Jr. scored 14 of his 26 points then secured his double-double with 11 rebounds
- High Point would close the game on a 17-2 run but never lead by more than four points
Standout Performances
- Sean Price finished with nine points and eight rebounds as well as career-high six assists in the loss
- Phlandrous Fleming Jr. scored 26 points in a battle of two of the top-three scorers in the Big South battling John-Michael Wright of High Point
- Terence Porter Jr. added nine points off the bench while Ja'Quavian Florence had eight and four rebounds
