Charleston Southern split a doubleheader with Coastal Carolina in its first midweek action of the season. The Bucs took the first game, 8-7, before the Chanticleers closed the day with a 7-6 win.
Â
CSU led 6-1 in the first game, with
Katelyn Norris and
Ashlyn Cribb both providing two-RBI base hits to account for most of the early scoring. Coastal rallied with three homers in the middle innings, but
Erika Cooper hit a go-ahead home run to right center in the bottom of the fifth that proved to be the game-winner.
Annah Junge started the game in the circle and went 4.0 innings, allowing four runs.
Alyssa Heinrich earned the win after pitching 3.0 innings in relief.
Â
The Bucs took an early lead in the second game with an
Ashley Meckley two-run homer in the first inning, but CCU responded with two-run innings in the second, fourth and fifth to take a 6-2 lead.
Sarah Brown got CSU within one on a three-run homer in the fifth, but the Bucs were unable to grab the lead and ultimately dropped a one-run contest for the second time this season.
Baylee Eaton earned the start and allowed six earned runs in 6.0 innings, while
Holly Clark tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
Â
Recapping Last Weekend
The Bucs won their first Big South game of the season night in an 11-inning thriller over Radford, but the visiting Highlanders rebounded to sweep a doubleheader and take the series from CSU.
Â
Brooklynn Brewington delivered the walk-off hit in the 11th inning of the series-opening contest, hitting an RBI single that scored Meckley. Junge threw a career-high 8.0 innings in the Friday win, while Heinrich earned the win after allowing just one hit in 3.0 innings.
Â
CSU's offense failed to get going in the first game of the doubleheader, as Radford jumped out to an early lead and defeated the Bucs 14-1. The Highlanders used a four-run first to take the series finale as well, 5-3.
Â
Madison Koger had a team-leading four hits on the weekend, notching two-hit games in both the series opener and the series finale. Junge had a 1.91 ERA in 11.0 innings across two appearances in the circle.
