Bucs continue road swing at Campbell

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern softball continues its 10-game road trip this weekend when it heads to Campbell for a three-game Big South series. The Bucs and Camels will play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon and a single game on Sunday.

Recapping Tuesday
Charleston Southern rallied for a pair of road wins at Georgia Southern. The Bucs took the first game of the doubleheader, 8-7, before a come-from-behind 4-1 win in the nightcap.
 
CSU hit two homers in the doubleheader, with both coming in clutch situations. Ashley Meckley broke a 7-all tie in the seventh inning of the first game with a solo homer into the bleachers beyond the left field wall and Madison Koger gave the Bucs the lead in the second game with a three-run homer down the left field line in the sixth inning.
 
Holly Clark tied her season high with six strikeouts in the first game and earned her third win of the season, while Alyssa Heinrich had a season-high five strikeouts in her first complete game of the season in the nightcap, earning her third win of the year.
 
The Bucs' win in the second game marked the first time CSU won this season when trailing after five innings. Charleston Southern was facing a 1-0 deficit in the sixth inning prior to Koger's three-run home run.
 
Katelyn Norris extended her on-base streak to 12 games in the doubleheader, while Sarah Brown now has a five-game hit streak. Brooklynn Brewington recorded her 10th multi-hit game of the season in the second game of the twin bill.
 
Recapping Last Weekend
The Bucs won their first Big South series of the season over the weekend, taking two-of-three from Gardner-Webb at the CSU Softball Field.
 
Charleston Southern rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the series opener with three runs across the fourth and fifth innings. Sarah Brown had the lone RBI for the Bucs on a single in the fourth inning, while CSU scored its last two runs on a pair of Runnin' Bulldog fielding errors.
 
GWU scored four runs in the final three innings of Saturday's first game to take the middle game of the series in eight innings, 6-3. A SeaEnna Satcher solo home run and an Ashley Meckley two-run homer accounted for all of the Bucs' offense in that game.
 
CSU responded in a big way in the series finale, taking the rubber match in run-rule fashion, 9-1, in five innings. Ashlyn Cribb had a career-high three hits, two doubles and four RBI's in the contest, including the game-ending hit. Holly Clark allowed just three hits in 5.0 innings for her second complete game win of the season.
 
Satcher and Meghan Gagliano had hits in all three games of the series for the Bucs, while Clark and Annah Junge earned the wins in the circle. Nine different Bucs had at least one hit in the series.
 
Season Leaders
Brewington is the Bucs' leader among its regular starters in batting average at .352 and hits with 31. Meckley has nine homers and five doubles to lead CSU in extra-base hits (15) and also has 16 runs batted in to lead the team in that category as well. Brown has 11 RBI's, while SeaEnna Satcher and Ashlyn Cribb have knocked in 10 runs apiece.
 
In the circle, Annah Junge leads the Bucs with a 4.46 ERA in a team-high 53.1 innings. Clark, Heinrich and Baylee Eaton have three wins each to lead CSU in that category, with Clark's 28 strikeouts leading the way for the Bucs. Opposing batters are hitting .265 against Eaton, the lowest mark on the team.
 
What to Watch For
Meckley has homered against each of Charleston Southern's last five opponents (College of Charleston, Winthrop, South Carolina, Gardner-Webb, Georgia Southern).
 
Six of the Bucs' regular starters are hitting above .250, with Brewington, Brown and Koger each hitting over .300.
 
Of the 10 games on this road trip, eight will be played outside the state of South Carolina. Those eight games are CSU's only games outside the Palmetto State this season.
 
Charleston Southern has at least one stolen base in 13 of its 15 Big South games this season. Brewington leads the Bucs with 12 stolen bases this year, while CSU has only been thrown out once on the basepaths in 2021.
 
Scouting Campbell
Campbell enters the weekend at 17-11 overall and 8-1 in Big South play. The Camels had a 10-game win streak snapped in their last game against UNCW.
 
Destini England leads the Camels with a .377 average and six triples. Bri Bryant has seven doubles, while Kayla Freeland has five homers and 19 RBI's for Campbell. The Camels have 53 stolen bases as a team this season, With Bryant and England accounting for nearly half of those.
 
In the circle, Campbell leads the Big South in ERA at 2.35 while limiting opposing hitters to a .232 average. Georgeanna Barefoot leads the team with 60 strikeouts in 72.1 innings, posting an 8-4 record with a 2.03 ERA.  Megan Richards leads the Camels in ERA at 1.73 in 60.2 innings pitched, while amassing a 6-3 record with 46 strikeouts.
 
Series Breakdown
Charleston Southern and Campbell have met 93 times on the diamond prior to this weekend. The series dates back to 1987 The teams have not met since the 2019 Big South Tournament in Buies Creek.
 
Campbell has a 55-37-1 advantage in the all-time series, including a 28-19 lead in games played in Buies Creek. The Camels have also won each of the last two series and won the last meeting between the teams in the Big South Tournament. CSU won the last regular season matchup between the programs.

Charleston Southern heads to Greenville for a midweek doubleheader at Furman Tuesday starting at 4 p.m.
