Late rally sends Winthrop past Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Visiting Winthrop scored three runs in the final two innings Friday evening to come from behind and defeat Charleston Southern, 4-3, at the CSU Softball Field.

The Bucs led for the first five-plus innings of the contest, as Annah Junge kept the Eagle bats at bay before the late offensive surge. Madison Koger had a pair of hits, while SeaEnna Satcher and Ashley Meckley each had RBI's for CSU. Meckley hit her team-leading sixth homer in the game.

Charleston Southern opened the scoring in the first inning after Brooklynn Brewington reached on an infield single and came around to score on a Satcher RBI single to right field. The Bucs added a run in the second inning after a delayed steal and rundown led to Erika Cooper swiping home.

Winthrop got a run back in the fourth on a sacrifice fly, but the Bucs responded with one of their own in the fifth. Meckley sent the first pitch she saw over the fence in left center for her second homer in as many games.

The Eagles tied the game in the sixth on a Taylor Charlton two-run homer and took the lead in the seventh on an Ansley Gilreath RBI single. Madyson Watson struck out four in a complete game for the visitors.
